24 V Emergency Power Supply
These instructions are intended for installers with
technical knowledge in emergency power supply
for PA systems . Please read the instructions care-
fully prior to operation and keep them for later
reference .
1 Overview
1.1 Front panel
1 On / Off switch for the signal buzzer (2)
2 Signal buzzer; sounds
1 . in case of mains failure
2 . in case of defect in the charging circuit
3 . in case the charge of the rechargeable battery
falls below 40 %
3 POWER LEDs
AC lights up when the emergency power sup-
ply is switched on via the POWER switch (3)
DC lights up in case of mains failure or when
the emergency power supply is switched
off via the POWER switch
4 POWER switch
5 LEDs BATTERY indicate the charging state of the
rechargeable batteries
6 LED CHARGING lights up when the recharge-
able batteries are being charged
1.2 Rear panel
7 Mains jack for connection to a mains socket
(230 V/ 50 Hz) via the supplied mains cable
8 Support for the mains fuse; replace a blown
fuse only by one of the same type
9 Screw terminals for external rechargeable bat-
teries if no rechargeable batteries are used in-
ternally .
It is possible either to insert rechargeable bat-
teries internally or to connect rechargeable bat-
teries externally!
10 Connection strip, is not required
11 24 V DC voltage outputs DC OUTPUTS for con-
nection of the consumers
12 Fuses for the DC voltage outputs; replace a
blown fuse only by one of the same type
2 Safety Notes
This unit corresponds to all relevant directives of
the EU and is therefore marked with
WARNING The power supply unit uses danger-
ous mains voltage . Leave servicing
to skilled personnel only . Inexpert
handling of the unit may result in
electric shock .
The unit is suitable for indoor use only . Protect
it against dripping water and splash water, high
air humidity, and heat (admissible ambient tem-
perature range 0 – 40 °C) .
Do not place any vessels filled with liquid, e . g .
drinking glasses, on the unit .
The heat generated inside the unit must be dissi-
pated by air circulation; never cover the air vents .
Do not set the unit into operation, and immedi-
ately disconnect the mains plug from the mains
socket if
1 . the unit or the mains cable is visibly damaged,
2 . a defect might have occurred after a drop or
similar accident,
3 . there are malfunctions .
The unit must in any case be repaired by skilled
personnel .
Never pull the mains cable to disconnect the
mains plug from the mains socket, always seize
the plug .
For cleaning only use a dry, soft cloth; never use
chemicals or water .
If the unit is used for purposes other than orig-
inally intended, if it is not correctly connected
or operat ed, or if it is not repaired in an expert
way, no guarantee claims for the unit or liability
for any resulting personal damage or material
damage will be accept ed .
If the unit is to be put out of operation
de finitively, take it to a local recycling
plant for a disposal which is not harmful
to the environment .
3 Applications
In case of mains failure, the unit PA-24ESP supplies
the connected consumers (e . g . PA amplifier and
preamplifier which are rated for a 24 V emergency
power operation) with electric power as long as the
capacity of the rechargeable batteries is sufficient or
until the mains voltage is available again .
4 Installation of the
Emergency Power Supply
To use the emergency power supply, either insert
two 12 V rechargeable batteries (e . g . MONACOR
NPA-12 / 24) into the unit or connect two exter-
nal 12 V rechargeable batteries . If the emergency
power supply is to be installed into a rack, insert
the rechargeable batteries before the installation .
Do not put defective rechargeable batteries
into the household waste but take them to
the special waste disposal (e . g . collective
container at your electrical supply shop) .
4.1 Inserting the rechargeable batteries
Caution! Prior to inserting the rechargeable bat-
teries, always disconnect the mains plug of the
.
emergency power supply from the mains socket .
1) Unscrew the housing cover of the emergency
power supply .
2) Remove the cover plate of the rechargeable
battery compartment .
3) Inside the unit, remove the red and the black
cables from the screw terminal (9) .
4) Place the two rechargeable batteries into the
rechargeable battery compartment in such a
way that the connections show upwards and
towards the rear .
5) The rechargeable batteries are connected in
series . For this purpose, fix the black cable to
the negative pole of the first rechargeable bat-
tery . Then connect its positive pole via the sup-
plied cable to the negative pole of the second
recharge able battery . Connect the red cable to
the positive pole of the second rechargeable
battery .

IN CASE OF USING EXTERNAL BATTERY,
INTERNAL BATTERY IS NOT AVAILABLE.
BE SURE NOT TO EXCEED 24 A OF DC OUTPUTS FOR USING OF INTERNAL BATTERY.

6) Replace the cover plate of the rechargeable bat-
tery compartment and tightly screw the hous ing
cover .
4.2 Rack installation
For rack installation, 3 rack spaces (= 133 mm) are
required . To prevent the rack from becoming top-
heavy, insert the emergency power supply into the
lower section of the rack . The front plate is not
sufficient for fixing the unit safely; additionally use
lateral rails or a bottom plate .
4.3 Connecting external rechargeable
batteries
To be able to connect rechargeable batteries exter-
nally, two cables are required which are not part
of the delivery . The minimum cross section of the
cables must be 25 mm
a cable lug (ring opening of 6 .4 mm) .
Caution! Prior to connecting the rechargeable
batteries, always disconnect the mains plug of the
emergency power supply from the mains socket .
The rechargeable batteries are connected in
series . For this purpose, connect the negative pole
of the first rechargeable battery via one of the fitted
cables to the negative connection of the terminal
strip EXTERNAL BATTERY (9) . Connect the posi-
tive pole of the first rechargeable battery via the
supplied cable to the negative pole of the second
recharge able battery . Connect the positive pole of
the second rechargeable battery via the second fit-
ted cable to the positive connection of the terminal
strip EXTERNAL BATTERY .
4.4 Connecting consumers
Connect the consumers that are to be fed via the
emergency power supply in case of mains failure
to the terminal DC OUTPUTS (11) . The outputs 1
and 2 are rated for a maximum load of 32 A and the
outputs 3, 4, and 5 for a maximum load of 16 A .
4.5 Mains connection
A mains failure is detected by the emergency power
supply PA-24ESP, therefore it must be connected
to the same 230 V power circuit as the consumers .
Connect the supplied mains cable to the mains
jack (7) and to the corresponding mains socket
(230 V/ 50 Hz) .
5 Operation
Switch on the emergency power supply with the
mains switch POWER (4) . The LED AC (3) lights up .
The unit must always remain switched on so that
the rechargeable batteries are always charged at
maximum .
The LEDs BATTERY (5) show the charging state
of the rechargeable batteries . The LED CHARGING
(6) lights up when the rechargeable batteries are
being charged . In case of mains failure, the LED
AC will extinguish and the LED DC (3) will light up .
The signal buzzer (2) sounds in case of a mains
failure, in case of a defect of the charging circuit,
or in case the charge of the rechargeable battery
has fallen below 40 % . The buzzer can be switched
off with the switch BUZZER (1) .
