4.4 Pressure relief/safety valve
The hydraulic pumpunit block
located below the black coverplate
of the reservoir is equipped with a
pressure relief valve (nr.4), which
functions also a pressure safety
valve. The operator can adjust the
pressure upto a maximum value,
which is factory set at:
• 370 bar for WEM, WEN and WER pumps;
• 720 bar for PAM, PEM, PEN and PER pumps.
The pressure can be adjusted by turning the star-
knob (nr.4) on the black top cover. The wingnut is
used for locking the spindle.
4.5 Precautions
Check the maximum admissible working pressure of
each hydraulic component connected to the pump.
The adjustable relief valve (see §4.4) which can be
set by the user has to be adjusted to the maximum
pressure of the lowest rated component in the circuit.
Make sure that each hydraulic coupler is wiped clean
before making a hose connection. High-flow coupler
halves seal automatically to prevent leakage when
disconnected.
Use dustcaps to keep dirt from entering disconnected
high-flow couplers. Do not tighten the coupler halves
with a wrench. This will deform the female half. For
hose connections, all mating parts must be
completely clean. Carefully remove old sealing
material, dirt and debris. Apply 1
to the thread, keeping the first couple of pitches free
from tape. Tighten threaded connections to such an
extent that there is no leakage. To prevent any
possible damage, do not overtighten the taper
threaded connections.
IMPORTANT: A clean hydraulic system is essential
for long, troublefree pump performance. Dirt, such as
sand and metal particals, will reduce the life-time of
the pump.
5.0 PUMP OPERATION
5.1 General
When starting the pump, always proceed as follows:
1. Set the hydraulic valve on the pump to "Neutral".
2. Place the pump horizontally on a solid and level
base.
3. Check hydraulic oil level. The oil must be visible
in the oil level indicator until full mark.
4. Connect the pump to the hydraulic circuit.
Pump start up procedures are described in
paragraph 4.

5.2 Electric-driven pumps
Start the pump by positioning the selector switch to
"ON" or "I". In case of a starter box, push the "ON" or
"I" button.
Shut down procedure
Set the hydraulic valve of the pump to "Neutral" and
position the selector switch to "OFF" or "O". In case
of a starter box, press the "OFF" or "O" button.
5.3 Air driven pumps (PAM)
1. Set the air pressure reducing valve at a low value
and start the pump by opening the air inlet valve
(Nr.8) of the pump.
2. The hydraulic output pressure depends on the air
inlet pressure. The max. output pressure can be
adjusted with the air pressure reducing valve
(BRV-100) located in the airline before it enters
the motor. The maximum admissible pressure is
2,5 m
/min at 7 bar.
3
Shut down procedure
Set the hydraulic valve to "Neutral" and close the air
valve (nr.8) of the pump.
5.4 Hydraulic oil temperature limits
The ideal working temperature of hydraulic oil is
45°C. The maximum admissible hydraulic oil
temperature is 60°C.
CAUTION: Extreme temperatures of
hydraulic oil is the most frequent cause for
malfunctioning pumps. In case of problems
with hydraulic oil temperatures, contact
your nearest ENERPAC representative for advice.
5.5 System deaeration
When in operation for the first time, the hydraulic
system is partly filled with air. It is necessary to bleed
air from the hydraulic system for safety reasons and
to ensure proper operation. Generally, air can be
taken out of the system by cycling the hydraulic
components several times. When all the air has been
taken out, the hydraulic components will function
smoothly. For example, sluggish cylinder operation is
usually a sign of air in the hydraulic system.
6.0 MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE
Maintenance is required when wear or leakage is
noticed. Periodically inspect all components to detect
any problem requiring service and maintenance.

repair and/or replacements. Contact Enerpac.
