Operation
CUTTING – STARTING A CUT AT EDGE OF WORKPIECE
1. Position the torch tip 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) above the workpiece
at the start of the intended cutting path. The tip should be
perpendicular to the surface of the metal. See Figure 6.
2. Pull trigger to start the plasma torch flame.
3. Move torch slowly along the intended cutting path. The
flame should cleanly cut through the metal. Adjust the hand
travel speed faster or slower according to the effectiveness of
the cut. Pulling the torch is generally a smoother and more
controllable motion than pushing the torch. See Figure 7.
4. The sparks should pass through the workpiece if the sparks
reflect back from the surface the hand travel speed is too fast.
See Figures 7 and 8.
NOTE: The underside of the kerf edges will have dross, which is a
build-up of metal and oxides; this is normal. The dross can easily
be removed with a disc sander. If the dross is difficult to remove,
increase the hand travel speed slightly when cutting.
