9. Breast Shield Sizing

Caution
• While some discomfort may be felt when first using a breast pump, using a breast pump
should not cause pain.
• If you are experiencing discomfort at the base of the nipple due to rubbing of your breast
tissue with the breast shield tunnel, use of a lubricant such as Tender Care
be beneficial.
• For assistance with correct breast shield sizing and comfort please visit
www.medelabreastshields.com or see a lactation consultant / breastfeeding specialist.

Correctly fitting breast shields

Properly fitting breast shields will ensure comfort and efficient milk expression.
To determine if you have the correct size, look at the following diagram:
• The nipple should be centered in the tunnel of the shield.
• The nipple should move freely without rubbing when the pump is turned on.
• Minimal or no part of your areola should be pulled into the tunnel of the
breast shield.
• You should see a gentle, rhythmic motion in the breast with each cycle of the
pump.
• After pumping, your breast should feel less full with no areas of hardness.
