5. Keep the correct sharpening angle of 30° between the file and the saw chain; see Fig. 19
and 20. Always use a file holder (available separately) when sharpening saw chains by
hand. File holders have markings for the sharpening angle.
6. Using light but firm pressure, perform a stroke towards the front corner of the tooth. Lift the
file away from the steel on each return stroke.

7. Make a few firm strokes on every tooth.
File all left-hand cutters in one direction.
Then move to the other side and file the
right-hand cutters in the opposite direction.
Occasionally remove filings from the file
with a wire brush (Fig. 21).
