2.INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL
DESCRIPTION
The ST3 300 and ST 500 are battery chargers/starters
powered by a 230Vac 50/60 Hz single phase supply , and are
electronically controlled at constant voltage and current by
means of a microcontroller.
They can be used to charge free electrolyte lead-acid
batteries used on motor vehicles (petrol and diesel), motor-
cycles, boats; battery charger for gel-type and nickel-
cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries (ST 500).
- The charger case has a protection degree of IP 20 and is
protected against indirect contacts by an earth lead as
required for class 1 equipment.

A) Selecting the Type of Battery :
In this case it is possible to select the type of battery to be
charged. This selection automatically modifies the battery
threshold voltages where there is passage from constant
current to constant voltage.
It is possible to select the following types of battery:
"GEL", lead-acid battery with solid electrolyte
(2.3 V/element).
"WET", lead-acid battery with liquid electrolyte
(2.4 V/element).
"Ni-Cd", nickel-cadmium batteries (1.4 V/element).
WARNING:
For nickel-cadmium batteries, the correct number of
elements for the three charge voltages are:
- 5 elements for 6V batteries,
- 10 elements for 12V batteries,
- 20 elements for 24 V batteries.
(B) Selecting the Battery Voltage:
This key is used to select the voltage of the battery/ies. The

available working voltages are the following: 6/12/24 V.
(C) Selecting Operating Mode:
Each time this key is pressed, one of the following operating
modes is selected.
STANDBY / CHARGE / START
The selection is made by pressing the button until the
desired setting or adjustment LED lights up, a buzzer will
signal when the setting has been made.
The STANDBY function offers a stabilised output power
supply of 12VDC-1.5A. When the plug of the STANDBY
connector is inserted into the cigar-lighter outlet the
corresponding LED lights up and essential vehicle services
will be powered.
This function can also be activated simultaneously with
battery charging, by enabling the "CHARGE" function.
The CHARGE function is used to charge the battery initially
at constant current using the previously made setting, for a
period of time selected using the D key. At the end of this
period, if the battery voltage has not reached a given level
(stored in the microcontroller) a further 2 hours will be added
and then the battery charger will switch off. If the battery
charger reaches the end-of-charging voltage before the time
setting elapses the battery charger will switch off without
adding the two hours as indicated above.
If the battery voltage is particularly low a very low current will
be supplied until 1.5 V/e is reached.
The START function is used to start the engine at
CONSTANT VOLTAGE with cycles lasting "5 sec ON" and
"20 sec OFF". The phase during which it is possible to start
the engine is indicated by flashing of the row of "D" and
"CHARGE" LED's.
The 20 sec pause is indicated by the two rows of LED's
switching off.

(DISPLAY) Current/Voltage/Time indicator :
This key can be used to select 3 different indicators:
- "I", displays the current supplied in Amps, both when
charging ("CHARGE"), and in "START" mode.
- "V", in this position the display shows the output voltage to
the battery in volts.
- "TIME", in this position the display indicates the length of
time that has elapsed during the "CHARGE" function in
minutes.
