Operation Mode
The device can be used in one of two modes, one is Active Mode, another is Passive Mode.
In Passive Mode, only EM282-R is used. Passive Mode can be to detect and locate leaks in pressure and
vacuum systems. These leaks can generate ultrasonic emission which can be detected by EM282-R. In
the areas where leaking gases are not pressurized or not sufficiently pressurized, there is no ultrasonic
sound for detection. In this situation, you can use Active Mode to detect and locate leak. In Active Mode,
EM282-R is used in conjunction with EM-282T. EM282-T is an ultrasonic transmitter which can send out
ultrasonic sound. By placing EM282-T in a sealed area, and scanning the exterior of this area with Em282-
R, the ultrasonic sound escaping from the sealed area will be
detected. A flaw in the seal can quickly and accurately be located and pinpointed.
Operation Instruction
1. Insert the headphone's plug into the headphone jack of EM282-R, then wear the headphone.
2. Press and hold down the TEST button, the "POWER" LED lights. You can hear" ticking tone"
the headphone, adjust the volume of the headphone to a suitable level. Then adjust the EM282-R's
sensitivity to a desired level with the sensitivity knob. Adjust the volume of the
suitable level.
3. Still press and hold down the TEST button, move the probe of EM282-R around the seals in the
suspected area. Once EM282-R picks up the ultrasonic sound generated by leak, the "ticking tone" will
increase in frequency and the " LEAK" LED will also light. It means that EM282-R finds the leak. The
closer the probe moves to the leak, the higher the frequency of the "ticking tone" becomes.
4. After you locate the leak, repair it properly and then retest with EM282-R.
5. When you finish leak detection and location, release the TEST button.
Note
1. There are many factors involved in the ultrasonic leak detection, such as the pressure within the vessel
under test, hole shape, hole size, temperature etc. In some cases, the ultrasonic sound caused by leak
is very weak, so you should set the EM282-R's sensitivity to the highest level at the beginning of leak
detection.
2. If the detected ultrasonic sound is too intense so that it is impossible to pinpoint the leak because the
"ticking tone" is too high in frequency, you should decrease the sensitivity with the sensitivity knob.
3. In noisy environments, you can decrease the sensitivity appropriately to exclude the disturbance
caused by noise.
4. When EM282-R detects ultrasonic sound, move its probe around the suspected leak to determine
whether the detected ultrasonic sound is from the suspected leak or from other areas.
5. Because ultrasonic sound attenuates rapidly when it travels over distance, move the probe of
EM282-R as close as possible to the suspected leak, remember to decrease the sensitivity if
necessary. During location, move the probe slowly.
General (Ultrasonic Transmitter)
EM282-T can send out ultrasonic sound of 40kHz and is designed to be used in conjunction with EM282-
R. Non-pressurized vessels or containers cannot generate ultrasonic sounds. Tightness check for them
(also cars, ships, etc) can be performed by using EM282-R and EM282-T together.
To do it, turn on EM282-T and place it inside the compartment to be checked. The ultrasonic sound mitted
by EM282-T will pass through orifice or faulty seal and will be quickly located by EM282-R.
Instruction (Ultrasonic Transmitter)
1. POWER Switch used to turn on or off EM282-T.
After EM282-T is turned on, ultrasonic sound of
40kHz is emitted continuously from the Ultrasonic Emitting Speaker.
2. Ultrasonic Emitting Speaker used to emit ultrasonic sound.
3. "POWER" LED It lights after EM282-T is turned on.
