BACKLAPPING_________________________________________________
This mower has with the ability to backlap the reel without removing it from the machine.
• Backlapping is a process which will lightly grind the reel to the bedknife whilst mounted on the mower.
• If significant amounts of metal are to be removed then the cutting unit should be reground in a
specialised grinding machine.
• Before any backlapping is carried out, Ransomes Jacobsen recommends that the backlapping
process should be risk assessed as a workshop process by the manager of the machine.
• Backlapping should only be carried out by trained staff.
• Ransomes Jacobsen recommend that grinding paste is only applied to the reel when it is stationery,
the engine is off and the parking brake applied.
• When applying grinding paste the reel should only be rotated by appropriately sized piece of wood or
the socket on screw [N] (Fig. 8.10).
• When the desired finish is achieved switch off the mower, clean off any surplus paste, reset the reel to
bedknife and return the controls to the normal mow positions.
PROCEDURE FOR BACKLAPPING THE CUTTING UNIT
1.
Tilt the machine backwards.
2.
Check the cutting cylinder is set correctly to the bottom blade (see previous note).
3.
Disengage the cylinder clutch and landroll clutch, when fitted.
4.
Remove the chain case cover.
5.
Apply some carborundum paste* on the spiral cutters.
6.
Rotate the cutting cylinder clockwise by using a socket spanner and brace on the screw [N]
(Fig. 8.10) at the LH end of the cylinder spindle.
NOTE: During the 'backlapping' operation regular checks should be made on the setting of the cutting
cylinder to the bottom blade and if necessary slight adjustments made.
When the cutters have been sharpened satisfactorily they will cut the paper cleanly along the length of
the bottom blade.
WIPE OFF ALL TRACES OF THE CARBORUNDUM PASTE.
