5.3 Turn on the sample flow
Complete the steps that follow to slowly open the sample valve. Refer to
the direction of the sample flow through the system.
1. Close the rinse water valve, the vent valve and the drain valve.
2. Open the flow cell valve.
3. Slowly open the sample valve to let some sample flow through the system. Continue to slowly
open the sample valve until the sample flow is slow and stable without air bubbles.
Note: The maximum flow rate that is specified for the sensor is 3 m (10 ft) per second.
4. Examine all connections for leaks.
Section 6 Calibration
Chemical exposure hazard. Obey laboratory safety procedures and wear all of the personal protective
equipment appropriate to the chemicals that are handled. Refer to the current safety data sheets
(MSDS/SDS) for safety protocols.
Chemical exposure hazard. Dispose of chemicals and wastes in accordance with local, regional and
national regulations.
The sensor stays in the flow cell during calibration. The different valves let the user stop the sample
flow and then flush or fill the flow cell with the rinse water or calibration solutions. Use a 2-point buffer
calibration with pH 4 and pH 7 buffer solutions.
Note: To check the temperature reading of the sensor, collect the drain water in a container as near as possible to
the flow cell. Measure the temperature of the water in the container and compare the value to the temperature
reading of the sensor. The user can also calibrate the temperature of the sensor before installation in the manifold
assembly. Refer to the user manual for the sensor for temperature calibration instructions.

6.1 Clean the sensor

Always clean the sensor before calibration. Complete the steps that follow to clean the sensor. Refer
to
Figure 1
on page 4 for the valve locations.
Note: The 0.10 N hydrochloric acid solution is sufficient to clean the sensor for most applications. If unwanted
material stays on the sensor, use the electrode cleaning solution in
1. Close the sample valve to stop the sample flow.
2. Drain the sample from the manifold assembly:
a. Open the vent valve.
b. Open the drain valve. The sample in the flow cell drains through the bottom drain.
3. Flush the sensor with the rinse water:
a. Open the rinse valve to flush the sensor with the rinse water. Refer to
The rinse water lets the user flush the sensor with some pressure.
b. Look through the view port to examine the condition of the sensor. If necessary, flush the
sensor again to remove unwanted material.
c. Close the rinse valve.
4. Soak the sensor in the acid solution:
a. Close the flow cell valve.
b. Open the solution valve below the acid container until the acid solution fills the flow cell. Refer
to
Figure
9. Let the acid solution go up into the flow line below the solution valves to clean the
flow line.
