• Incremental encoders:
Equivalent pulse sequences whose number is proportional
to the traveled rotation angle.
• Absolute encoders:
Digital information, that is to sat that every angular position
is a unique bit pattern.
• A combination of incremental and absolute signals is also
possible.
Singleturn encoders determine the shaft position for every re-
volution. This results in a position area — with different resol-
utions according to the type — within 360°.
Compared with the singleturn variants, multiturn variants
have in addition the possibility to determine the absolute posi-
tions over multiple revolutions. This results in a position area
>360°.

3.3 Explosion protection
The explosion protection approval is an option that must be
considered already when selecting the variant and placing
the order.
The encoders are suitable for use in potentially explosive at-
mospheres, in compliance with the following classifications.
3.3.1 Classification
The encoders bearing the EX marking on the device comply
with:
