7. Notes for mounting and operating in hazardous areas (Europe)
The flange and/or the pipe connections must be so laid out that they are sufficiently compliant
with EN 50 284 section 4.5. The guidelines of EN 50 284 must be observed. The thermometer
must be connected electrically to the surrounding earthed installatio.
GB
For applications which require Category 1/2 equipment, an additional thermowell (from
corrosion-resistant steel, wall thickness min. 1 mm) must isolate the thermometer from the
measured medium.
The process pressure and temperature range of the medium, for applications which require
Category 1/2 equipment, must lie between 0.8 ... 1.1 bar and -20 ... +60 °C. If the thermometer is
operated outside of these atmospheric conditions, the approval as Category 1/2 equipment only
serves as a guideline. Additional tests for the specific expected operating conditions are recom-
mended.
I) Installation in Zones 20 / 21 / 22 (dust)
The requirements of DIN EN 50 281-1-2 and DIN EN 60 529 must be considered
The surface temperature of the equipment must not be high enough to ignite disturbed dust or
dust deposited on the equipment.
Without dust deposit:
The surface temperature may not exceed 2/3 of the ignition temperature in °C of the respective
dust/air mixture (DIN VDE 0165 section 3.2).
With dust deposit:
On surfaces where a dangerous deposit of ignitable dust is not effectively prevented, the
surface temperature may not exceed a temperature of 75 K less than the ignition temperature
of the respective dust. With layer thicknesses over 5 mm, a further reduction of the temperature
is necessary.
J) The installer guarantees as his own responsibility that all in-use thermometers are identifiable
with respect to all safety-relevant characteristics.
K) Electrical screening may only be grounded at one end, and outside of the Ex area.
There must be a galvanic separation between the intrinsically safe and the non-intrinsically safe
electrical circuits.
The housing must be grounded against electromagnetic fields and electrostatic discharge.
Mounting within metallic enclosures:
The screen must be fully coupled to the potential difference of the connected enclosure.
Mounting within non-metallic enclosures:
All electrically connected thermometer components within the hazardous area must be provided
with equipotential bonding.
