Removing the Drive Belt
WARNING: The blade is sharp. Always wear
gloves when working near the blade.
WARNING: Before you remove the belt,
disconnect the wire from the spark plug.
1. Drain the fuel tank.
2. Remove the grass bag and mulching plug if installed.
3. Remove the screw (A, Figure 17) securing the belt cover
to the underside of the mower deck.
4. Remove the six bolts (B) securing the rear baffle to the
underside of the mower deck. (Note: There are two
bolts located behind each rear wheel.)
5. Fold the rear handles and stand the mower on its back
end. (You may also tip the mower on its side to gain
access to the underside. Always tip the mower with the
muffler side down.)
6. Remove the belt cover and rear baffle.
7. Disconnect the transmission control cable "Z" fitting (A,
Figure 18) from the transmission.
8. Rotate the transmission to gain access to the two
screws attaching the belt guide (B) to the transmission.
Remove the screws and the belt guide.
9. Remove the belt from the transmission pulley.
10. Remove the belt from the engine pulley (A, Figure 19).
Carefully slip the belt over the ends of the blade (B).
Note: Models have belt guides around the engine pulley that
must be removed prior to belt removal. Be sure to replace
after belt installation.
Note: Make sure you replace the drive belt only with a
replacement belt from the factory.
Installing the Drive Belt
1. Reverse the above steps.
2. Before you begin to mow, make sure the drive system
will correctly disengage and that the mower will stop. If
the drive system will not disengage, take the mower to
an authorized service center before you operate the
mower.
