9. POOL PUMP TROUBLESHOOTING
GUIDELINES
The engine does not start.
Ensure that the terminal board connections
correspond to the wiring diagram on the motor
nameplate label.
Ensure that the motor is wired for the supply voltage
available in the field (see pump operating label).
1. Incorrect wiring connections, open switches or
relays, tripped circuit breakers or other breakers,
blown fuses.
Solution: Check all connections, circuit breakers
and fuses. Reset tripped circuit breakers or replace
blown fuses.
2. Manually check the rotation of the motor shaft to
ensure that it is free and that there is no obstruction.
3. If you have a timer, make sure it works properly.
Bypass it if necessary.
The engine stops.
1. Low voltage at the motor or power drop (often
caused by undersized wiring or use of an extension
cord).
Solution: Contact a qualified professional to check
that the wiring is of the correct size.
2. The motor may overheat due to direct sunlight or
low water level in the pump basket. Solution: Check
the water flow to ensure that the amount of water
reaching the pump is uniform.
NOTE - Your pump motor is equipped with an
«automatic thermal overload safety device». The
motor will automatically shut down if the power supply
drops before heat damage accumulates and burns
out the windings. The «thermal overload protection»
will allow the motor to restart automatically once it
has cooled down. It will continue to shut down until
the problem is corrected. Be sure to correct the
cause of the overheating.
The engine purrs, but does not start.
1. The wheel is blocked by debris.
Solution: Have a qualified repair professional open
the pump and remove the debris.
2. The motor has gummed up either during months in
the box after manufacture or during winter storage.
Solution: Insert a flat blade screwdriver into the slot
at the rear end of the motor shaft and turn the motor
shaft until it moves freely. On some models, you may
need to remove the protective metal cap to gain
access to the motor shaft.
Water leaks around inlet and outlet connections.
1. Loose unions or hose connections.
Solution: Tighten or remove the fittings, apply PTFE
tape and reinstall.
2. Loose hose clamps on the hose.
Solution: Tighten the clamps using a nut driver or
spanner instead of a screwdriver.
The pump does not prime.
1. Empty the pump/strainer housing.
Solution: Make sure that the pump body/strainer
is filled with water and that the O-ring in the cover
is clean. Make sure the O-ring is correctly placed
in the groove of the cover. Make sure the O-ring is
lubricated and the strainer cover is firmly locked in
position. The lubricant will help create a tighter seal.
2. Loose connections on the suction side.
Solution: Tighten the hose/union fittings or hose
clamps on the hose.
NOTE - Any self-priming pump will not prime if there
are air leaks at the suction. Leaks cause bubbles to
emanate from the return connections on the wall of
the in-ground pool.
3. O-ring leakage on valves.
Solution: Tighten, repair or replace the valves.
4. The strainer or skimmer basket is full of debris.
Solution: remove the strainer body cover or the
skimmer cover, clean the basket and refill the strainer
body with water. Tighten the cover.
5. The plumbing in the intake of the in-ground pool
on the suction side is blocked. Solution: Contact a
qualified repair professional to perform a vacuum
test. Shut down the system to determine if the pump
is developing a vacuum. You should have a vacuum
of 5 to 6 inches at the strainer cover (only your pool
dealer can confirm this with a vacuum gauge). You
can check by removing the skimmer basket and
holding your hand over the bottom hole with the
skimmer full and the pump running.
If you do not feel suction, check if the line is blocked.
- If the pump develops a vacuum, check if the
suction line is blocked or if the strainer basket is
dirty. Air leakage in the inlet pipe may be the cause.
- If the pump does not develop a vacuum and the
pump has sufficient priming water»:
o Recheck the strainer housing cover and all
threaded connections for suction leaks. Check and
tighten all system clamps on above ground pools.
o Check the voltage to ensure that the engine is
