Fun activities:
Insects:
Create a terrarium by covering the bottom of the exploration set's plastic jar with some soil and plants.
Using the set's tweezers, gently add insects you have found in your backyard, observe them up close,
and carefully release them when you're finished.
Insects outnumber every other creature on Earth. There are more than one and a half million animal
species in the world, and about one million of those species are insects. Some experts believe that as
many as 30 times this number of insects are yet to be discovered.
Fish:
Fill the jar with clean water, and, using your net, very carefully add a fish you have found in a river or
lake. Observe up close how it breathes through the gills at the sides of its head. Gills are made up of
large numbers of delicate plates, packed with blood vessels. As water flows through the gills, mol-
ecules of oxygen pass into the blood and are carried around the body. You'll notice that, just as humans
take more breaths when we exercise, a fish's gills become more active the faster it swims.
