Alternating Pressure System
Instructions for Use
Figure 1
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Air support therapy is not recommended when spinal stability is a concern.
INDICATIONS
This device (P102) is intended to provide pressure redistribution to aid in the
prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers. A system consists of the Plexus
Jr. control unit (C102) combined with Plexus
contains two sets of air cells that alternately inflate and deflate. The air cells
redistribute the patient's weight over the surface and effectively reduce tissue
interface pressure.
CAUTION
Check patient's skin regularly. Consult physician if any redness or
skin break occurs. Serious injury could result if the patient's skin
condition is left untreated.
Do not place the control unit in the patient's bed, in contact with the
patient, or under sheets or other coverings. This could cause
serious injury or could affect control unit performance.
Do not use in the presence of a flammable anesthetic mixture or
with oxygen (O
) or nitrous oxide (N
2
Verify bed overlay is in good condition.
Verify bed side rails are compatible with bed frame and existing
mattress.
Use with appropriate top sheet and minimize layers of bedding
between patient and overlay.
CONTROL PANEL
1.
Power ON/OFF Switch on side of unit.
2.
COMFORT CONTROL DIAL adjusts for patient comfort.
 Soft(
)—Minimum inflation level of the overlay
 Firm (
)—Maximum inflation level of the overlay.
INSTRUCTIONS
1.
Place control unit on flat surface or suspend control unit on end of bed
using attached hooks. See Figure 1. Position overlay on existing mattress.
Tuck end flaps of overlay under ends of bed mattress.
2.
Connect the hose assembly between the overlay and the control unit.
3.
Plug the power cord into a properly grounded outlet. Adjust pressure
control knob to highest setting for quick inflation and turn control unit on
using green on/off switch. Unit will take approximately 40 minutes to
inflate the overlay.
4.
Position patient on overlay. Adjust pressure control knob for patient
comfort.
5.
Perform Hand Check.
A Hand Check must be performed every 8 hours to verify proper
operation.
To perform the Hand Check:
With the patient on his or her back, slide hand, flat and palm up, between
the overlay and the mattress. Hand should be directly under the air cell
that is under the patient's buttocks (or other bony area).
See Figure 2.

HAND CHECK
Properly inflated
Wait for full inflation of the air cell directly above hand. If the patient's body is
not in direct contact with hand, the system is operating correctly.
If during full inflation of air cell, the patient's body is in direct contact with flat
hand, the system is not operating properly. Adjust the pressure control to a
higher setting. Wait 10 minutes and repeat the Hand Check. If the Hand
Check fails, check that the hoses are not kinked or pinched. If repeated Hand
Check fails and hoses are not kinked, contact Dealer or Gaymar for further
instruction.
WARNING
Deflate before CPR or CPR will be ineffective.
To deflate overlay for CPR:
Disconnect the hoses from the control unit. See Figure 3. The
overlay will deflate in approximately 20 seconds.
Proceed with CPR procedures.

CLEANING
The control unit housing, tubing and overlay should be cleaned between
patients.
1.
To clean, use soap, water and a clean cloth to wipe down the Control Unit,
power cord, hoses and overlay. Do not use abrasive cleaners on the
overlay. Wipe dry with a clean, dry cloth. Note: Blood and other body
fluids must be thoroughly cleaned from all surfaces before applying
disinfectants.
2.
Apply disinfectant to the external surfaces of the Control Unit, hoses and
overlay. Gaymar recommends these disinfecting agents: Phenolic
Disinfectant Cleaner or a 10% Chlorinated Bleach Solution. Allow contact
time according to manufacturers instructions. The solution contact time is
what makes disinfection effective.
3.
Wipe down the overlay with a clean, dry cloth to remove any excess
disinfectant.
4.
Top sheets of overlay may also be laundered between patient uses or as
required to maintain good patient hygiene. Fill the washing machine with
warm water (21 - 60 °C [70 -140 °F]). Add one cup of laundry detergent.
Place no more than four top sheets in a single extra large load capacity
washing machine. When wash cycle is complete, remove promptly from
machine and ensure all excess water is drained from load. Place dryer on
LOWEST heat setting, or AIR FLUFF if available until dry. Verify top
sheet is completely dry before placing under patient.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
Problem: Air cells fail to inflate.
Solution: Make certain the air hose is not kinked, cracked or split.
Verify the power switch is illuminated, signifying the control unit has
power. Verify the air hoses are fully inserted with a positive connection.
Problem: Loss of power.
Solution: Make certain the power receptacle has power. The automatic
reset circuit breaker may have tripped. Wait five (5) minutes and check
power again.
