Release the pressure by moving the slider as shown on the drawing. The
writing needle will fall back to its initial position; the quick connection can be remo-
ved from the spark-plug hole after having exercised a light pressure on the engine.
-
Advance the card of a step, pressing the designated push-button.
-
Test the compression of the second cylinder as previously explained, and so
on to the last cylinder.
Test analysis
Observing the needle movements during the test, it is possible to draw the following
results about the engine conditions:
-
Quick-feed of the needle during the fi rst revolutions of the engine and slow-
feed to the maximum in the following revolutions = piston rings and valves are in
good condition.
-
Slow-feed of the needle from the fi rst revolutions of the engine = the valve
seats are probably burnt.
-
Quick-feed during the fi rst revolutions of the engine and slight feed to follow
= general wear conditions and poor seal of the movers.
Result analysis
At the end of the test, remove the card from the card-holder, and look carefully at
the diagram:
-
The test values correspond with the specifi cations of the engine manufac-
turer and match= the tightness of the piston rings and valves is good.
-
The test values are low but the same for all cylinders: general wear of the
engine.
-
The test values are very discordant = unusual wear in the cylinders with the
lower values. Insuffi cient wear of some valves.
-
The lowest values are in 2 adjacent cylinders = the head gasket relating to
these 2 cylinders is probably damaged.
Introducing engine oil through the spark-plug hole or the injector hole, the probable
piston ring losses are partly eliminated, therefore, repeating the test, if higher pres-
sure values are reached, this means that the detect is due to the loss of elasticity of
bands or cylinder deformity.
lf the results are some as before, check the valves.
N.B.
- Only use writing cards on our compression tester having checked the correct
4-17 calibration for petrol engine models, and 8-40 calibration for Diesel engine mo-
dels.
