What is MP3?
MP3 is an 'almost-CD' quality file format for sound files which is very popular for music on the internet.
MP3 itself is an acronym for MPEG Layer 3 which is a format used to tightly compress audio files. MP3 files
have the .mp3 extension. Currently up to 12 to 1 compression is attainable and produces high sound
quality with very little quality loss. For example, you could get hundreds of songs on to a single CD using
the MP3 format. At present the most well known digital music / sound format is MP3 and most digital audio
players can play it.
Is MP3 legal?
Yes, MP3 is just a file format. It is legal to play MP3 as long as the copyright holder of the MP3 sound or
music file has granted permission to use it, that can be either through purchase of Freeware or public
domain distribution agreements.
