• Optional – For quieter operation of the
fan and shutter increase the distance
between the fan blade and the open
shutter. To do this, add 2 x 4-inch frame
extensions on top of the joists and
brace-back pieces surrounding the
shutter hole. This is especially
important in homes with 2 x 4-inch
ceiling joists. Size the two 2 x 4s
attached to the top of the uncut joists to
extend 6 inches beyond the shutter hole
on each side (this will provide support
for the framing lumber installed in Step
8). Attach the 2 x 4s to the joists with
flat metal connectors fastened with
1-inch wallboard screws, or by toenailing
/
with 3

-inch (16d) common nails.

• When you've completed this step,
you will have a sealed-off vacuum box
for the fan and shutter.
Step 8: Install framing lumber
around the shutter hole
• In the attic, nail down framing lumber
around the shutter hole.
For 30-inch fans, make sure the framing
lumber extends 32 inches. For 36-inch
fans, the framing lumber should extend
38 inches.
Note:
For attics with 2 x 4-inch ceiling
joists, 2-inch-thick framing lumber is
recommended. For attics with 2 x 6-inch
or 2 x 8-inch joists, 1-inch thick framing
lumber may be used.
• Replace the insulation around the
fan frame.
Step 9: Position fan assembly
over the shutter hole
• From the hallway below, pass the fan
assembly to a helper in the attic
through the shutter hole. If easier, you
can carry the assembly up to the attic.
• Optional – From the attic, apply

or foam rubber weather stripping to the
bottom edges of the fan frame. This
helps reduce vibration noise.
• Center the fan over the shutter hole
with the wooden frame of the fan resting
on top of the framing lumber you
installed in Step 8.
• Capture the fan frame on all four sides
by nailing 2 x 4-inch wood blocks to
the framing lumber.
• Optional – Apply adhesive-backed rubber
or foam rubber weather stripping between
each wood block and the frame to help
eliminate vibration noise.
Step 10: Reposition motor
(if necessary)
• On some belt drive whole house attic fans,
the motor is already mounted and shipped

in the correct position above the struts.

• If mounted below the struts, unbolt the
motor; flip it up and position it as shown.
(Illustration H)
• Attach the fan belt and slide the motor
as necessary to achieve the proper belt
tension, as shown.
Note:
If belt tension is too tight, the motor
will overheat and may shut off. If too loose,
the belt will slip and cause excessive wear.

Step 11: Make Electrical Wiring
Connections
• Refer to 'Electrical Requirements' section,
page 4, for information on bringing electric
power to the fan location.
• At your home's breaker box, turn off the elec-
trical power to the circuit associated with the
fan. Do not turn on the power to this circuit
until you have completely finished the fan
installation. Be sure to test that the power is
off prior to attempting any work on the wiring
of the fan.
• Carefully follow the wiring diagram shown in
(Illustration I) and all instructions. Incorrect
wiring can cause motor failure and, possibly,
fire.
• From the attic, follow all local electrical codes
to connect power and grounding wires to the
fan motor and drop wires down the wall cavi-
ty to the location where the wall switch will
be placed.
• An electrical junction box is required for
mounting the switch in the wall. The box must
comply with UL514 to ensure code compliant
installation. Failure to use a listed junction box
can result in an unsafe installation.
• Note: When cutting into the wall to install the
wall junction box for the fan switch, be care-
ful not to damage existing electrical wiring or
other utilities. This could cause additional
risk of electric shock. You can buy devices to
detect the presence of such wiring at your
hardware store or home improvement center.
• Connect the ground wire from the power
supply to the ground screw on the two speed
fan switch.
WARNING:
Only use copper wire
to attach the switch to the power supply and
fan motor. Failure to use copper wire can
result in an unsafe installation.
• Wire from the switch to the fan motor, ensur-
ing to attach a ground wire to the ground
screw found on the fan motor.
• In the hallway below, after mounting the UL
listed wall junction box, attach the two speed
wall switch to the circuit as shown.
(Illustration I)
WARNING:
Only use copper or
copper clad aluminum wire to attach the fan
switch to the power supply and fan motor.
Failure to use copper or copper clad aluminum
wire can result in an unsafe installation.
• For Side Wire: Remove insulation from wires,
exposing 3/4" of copper conductor. Loop
wires clockwise 3/4 turn around terminal
screws and tighten screws firmly.
• For Back Wire: Use strip gauge on back of
device (approx. 1/2"). Insert wires into
appropriate wire wells and tighten terminal
screws firmly.
• Attach the ground wire from the ground
screw on the fan motor to the ground screw
located on the fan switch.
• Attach the ground wire from the power sup-
ply wire to the ground screw located on the
fan switch.
• Check to see that all wiring is in place and
secure.
