TuffTemp™ THERMOMETERS BY ATKINS
Atkins TuffTemp Microprocessor Thermocouple Thermometers are designed
specifically for harsh, commercial applications requiring the highest accuracy of
temperature measurement. The shock resistant housing incorporates molded
thermoplastic endcaps in combination with a custom aluminum extrusion for
outstanding durability and impact resistance. Instruments are sealed against
moisture and other contaminants and the circuit boards are coated with a
conformal coating to protect electronic components from the environment.
PLUS models include the following additional features: .1/1° function to switch
between whole degree and tenth degree temperature display, HOLD function to
"freeze" current reading, and LIGHT function that activates an electroluminescent
backlight for use in low light conditions.
WARRANTY
TuffTemp thermometers are backed by 5-Year Instrument Warranties to cover
manufacturers defects. AccuTuff probes include 1-Year Warranties on the probe
assembly.
OPERATION
To turn instrument on, press and hold the ON/OFF keypad momentarily.
To turn instrument off, repeat step. To conserve battery life, Auto-Off feature
automatically turns off the unit after five minutes of keypad inactivity. (PLUS
MODELS: To disable Auto-Off, press SHIFT + ON/OFF. When Auto-Off is active,
"AUTO" appears in upper left corner of display.) To change temperature scale
display from Fahrenheit to Celsius, press the F/C keypad or SHIFT + F/C keypad
for PLUS MODELS.
PLUS MODELS:
•
To change from .1 to 1˚ temperature display, press .1/1˚ keypad.
•
The HOLD keypad will "freeze" the current temperature reading on the
display. When depressed momentarily, the display will flash the current
temperature. Press the HOLD keypad again to return to normal temperature
mode.
•
To allow viewing the temperature display in low light conditions, press the
LIGHT keypad to activate the backlight feature. When depressed, the
backlight will turn on for five seconds.
BATTERY & REPLACEMENT
The instrument uses a single AA 1.5VDC battery and provides over 1000 hours
of battery life under typical usage. A battery icon will appear in the lower right
corner of LCD when it is time to replace the battery. When the battery voltage
falls to approximately 0.9VDC, "bAtt" appears on the display and the unit will
shut-off and not operate until a new
battery is installed.
To replace the AA 1.5VDC battery, turn battery hatch cover counter-clockwise to
open and remove battery cover. Install a new alkaline cell (Energizer® E91 or
equivalent) ensuring correct polarity. Align tabs on battery hatch with housing
and while pressing in slightly, twist cover clockwise 1/4 turn to secure in place.
SPECIFICATIONS - AccuTuff™ Models
TEMPERATURE RANGE
-40˚F to 500˚F (-40.0˚C to 260.0˚C)
SYSTEM ACCURACY
With factory calibration, ±0.9F˚ (±0.5C˚) over entire measurement range at
ambient temperatures between 68˚F and 86˚F (20˚C and 30˚C). Surface probe
temperature errors for draft-free, flat, clean oiled surfaces with 1 Kg pressure
are typically within +1.5˚C and -3.5˚C without thermostat cycling.
Operation in high energy electromagnetic fields may cause the instrument
accuracy to vary slightly. This could occur under rare conditions with very
specific frequencies and levels of RF interference not typically encountered in
normal operating environments.

PROBES - AccuTuff™ Models
The specially engineered patented thermocouple cable and probe ensures reliable, fast,
and accurate temperature measurement and the housing provides a convenient wrap
and stow feature for storage. Critical material selection and testing has been done to
ensure that the entire probe and cable assembly will withstand the rigors of daily use.
However, should a probe need replacing, it can easily be replaced in the field without
need for recalibration.
To replace probe, use a Phillips head screwdriver to loosen captive screw in probe
connector where it plugs into instrument. Grasp probe connector and unplug it from
instrument. Install new probe ensuring correct polarity and tighten screw to secure to
instrument. Use care not to overtighten screw
PROBES - VersaTuff™ Models
TYPE K - ANSI type K thermocouple with miniature thermocouple connector.
TYPE J - ANSI type J thermocouple with miniature thermocouple connector.
TYPE T - ANSI type T thermocouple with miniature thermocouple connector.
Thermocouple probe inserts into the connector openings at the top of the instrument.
Observe the correct polarity when inserting the probe (note the different size connector
prongs). An open probe will indicate "LO". Replace probe to correct the problem.
CALIBRATION
This instrument was factory calibrated under controlled conditions using N.I.S.T.
traceable test equipment. If you would like this instrument to be recalibrated, or if a
certificate of calibration is needed, it is recommended that you return the instrument to
Atkins Temptec.
TRACEABILITY
We certify that this instrument has been calibrated to temperature and electrical
standards traceable to the U.S. Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards
and Technology.
