2. Brief description
The EMM offer all the advantages of modern
effective power monitoring. Every 6.6 ms, the
effective power of a drive system or of any other
3-phase consumer is calculated from three
currents, voltages and the phase angle.
The EMM 3-.../500AC-16-IFS modules can record
currents of up to 16 A via the integrated converters.
The EMM 3-.../500AC-IFS- modules also require
external converters.
The actual switching of the load is carried out by a
separate switching element. In this configuration,
the EMM reliably protects connected loads –
irrespective of their rated power – against overload
and underload, and provides permanent status
monitoring.
Freely parameterizable switching and message
Power within limits
Monitoring is accomplished by freely
parameterizable switching and message
thresholds for overload and underload detection.
The default setting of the thresholds can be
identical for both directions of rotation or separate
for right/left rotation.
The basis value for parameterization is the
consumed effective power, thus offering a much
more precise basis, independent from voltage
fluctuations and drive load, than taking merely the
current into consideration. If a switching threshold
is exceeded or fallen below, EMM initiates an
emergency shutdown of the motor immediately (or
after an adjustable "delay time"). In addition, a
message – for example to a subordinate control
station – is transmitted via an output.
This status can only be deactivated using a defined
reset. If the effective power consumed is
determined as being above or below the message
thresholds, only one feedback is transmitted for the
duration for which the module was triggered.
In addition, signals are generated by the module for
18
thresholds and four configurable digital outputs
allow not only motor protection, but in particular,
protection for downstream units or mechanical
elements.
With the configuration software or a fieldbus
interface, you have all the relevant parameters
available: Apparent, effective and reactive power,
currents and voltages, phase angles, cycle and
operating hours counter, power meter.
The EMM modules can monitor up to eight
measured values simultaneously and control the
four digital outputs in accordance with the
parameterization.
the recognition of the direction of rotation. Phase
failures are detected and signaled.
Permanent status monitoring with high scanning
rates allows protection of the entire system,
including motor protection.
In the case of the operating modes right and left
rotation, reverse and limit switch operation (with
integrated restart inhibit), actuating and regulating
drives, pumps, tools, conveyor belts and the like,
are checked for function, contamination or wear.
The adjustable "inrush suppression" time can be
used to mask out the switching operation from the
monitoring process.
3. Connection notes
3.1. Startup
A brand new device must be parameterized before commissioning. Operation is otherwise
not possible!
In order to prevent parameters from being changed during operation, the software can only be used when
the mains voltage has been switched off.
Prerequisites: CONTACTRON-DTM-IFS software for device parameterization of the EMM electronic
motor management modules (Order No.: 2297727).
Programming adapter IFS-USB-PROG-ADAPTER for configuration of Phoenix Contact
INTERFACE system modules with 12-pos. S-Port interface (Order No.: 2811271).

3.2. Mains connection and line protection

Caution: Never work when voltage is applied!
Danger
• The rated control supply voltage and control voltage inputs must be operated with power supply
modules in acc. with DIN 19 240 (max. 5% residual ripple)!
In case of devices with 230 V AC activation, always use the same phase for the rated
control supply voltage and the control inputs.
• In order to avoid the inductive or capacitive decoupling of disturbing pulses with long control wires, we
recommend the use of shielded conductors.
If you want to clamp two conductors under one terminal point, you must use a conductor
with the same conductor cross-section.

3.3. Thermistor input

The "Th1" ad "Th2" terminal points can be used to connect 1 to 6 thermistors PTC (PTC thermistors) in
series in order to protect the motor against overheating.
