• PIN 1: GROUND
• PIN 2: POSITIVE (NON-INVERTED) SIGNAL
• PIN 3: NEGATIVE (INVERTED) SIGNAL
They may be used with CD players or DACs that
have a balanced analogue output, or any other
high level balanced analogue sources. We
recommend use of the XLR inputs whenever
a balanced output is available.
SSP Input
The SSP IN of the OMEGA SERIES PRE-AMPLIFIER
offers a unity-gain signal path through the unit.
This input is intended for sources with their own
volume controls (such as the Classé SSP series).
It is available on both balanced (XLR) and single-
ended (RCA) connectors.
Please note that signals connected to this input
are passed without attenuation and are not
affected by the Volume Control. To avoid damage
to your speakers, use this input only as intended.
IR In (and Out)
The IR IN jack will permit you to install an
outboard infrared sensor and therefore be able
to control the OMEGA SERIES PRE-AMPLIFIER
remotely from another room where the outboard
IR sensor has been installed. These connections
will be found immediately above the DC power
inlet at the back of the pre-amplifier unit. The
IR output is the same as the IR signal input, and
the OMEGA SERIES PREAMPLIFIER may be daisy-
chained with other electronics which have similar
IR inputs (and outputs).
OUTPUTS
The Classé OMEGA SERIES PRE-AMPLIFIER has
three (3) LINE LEVEL (single-ended) and two
(2) balanced outputs. Both single ended and
balanced outputs are working at all times, and
may be used separately, or simultaneously.
Record Output
Whatever input is selected by the INPUT
SELECTOR will be fed to the REC OUTPUT jacks.
This should be connected to the TAPE IN or LINE
IN of the tape deck. Only a single-ended RCA,
input is supplied.
Line Level Outputs
Two pairs or single-ended (RCA) outputs are
provided: one NON-INVERTING and one
INVERTING. The former is a normal line-level
output that preserves the polarity of the audio
signal. The latter is the same except the polarity
of the audio signal is inverted. This design helps
keep a perfectly balanced load on the
preamplifier circuitry.
Do not mix the INVERTING and the NON-
INVERTING outputs (i.e. do not take a Left
INVERTED output and a RIght NON-INVERTED
output as a stereo pair).
Balanced Outputs
A power amplifier with balanced inputs and
balanced interconnects are also required. For
use with a balanced power amplifier other than
Classé, the wiring of the 3-pin XLR connectors
must be wired as follows:
• PIN 1: GROUND
• PIN 2: POSITIVE (NON-INVERTED) SIGNAL
• PIN 3: NEGATIVE (INVERTED) SIGNAL
If the pin configuration of the XLRs on the
power amplifier differs from above, the
balanced interconnects must be modified
to insure correct phase.
Having confirmed the correct connections, plug
the XLR connectors of the balanced interconnects
into the locking XLR connector on the rear of
the OMEGA SERIES PRE-AMPLIFIER marked
BALANCED OUTPUT. (To remove the connectors,
press the tab above the connector.)
Standby
The Classé OMEGA SERIES PRE-AMPLIFIER has
a STANDBY BUTTON located on the left lower
corner of the pre-amplifier front panel which
permits you to partially shut down the unit while
keeping important parts of the circuitry warmed
up.
Input Selector
The input selector has one button for selecting
the inputs. Pressing the button cycles through
the six available inputs: LINE 1, LINE 2, LINE 3,
BAL 1, BAL 2, and BAL 3, then back to LINE 1.
Tape
(TAPE input selection is available from the remote
wand only.)
Volume Control
The VOLUME CONTROL varies the output level of
both channels simultaneously. It can be operated
manually by rotating the wheel clockwise to
increase or counterclockwise to decrease the
volume, or remotely by using the hand held
control unit.
Turning UP the Volume will un-mute the
preamplifier and the selected source may be heard.
The volume display reflects the relative gain
applied to the signal in decibels (dB). The volume
control varies from OFF at its minimum, through
negative numbers (to indicate signal attenuation)
and up to +5.5dB (positive numbers indicate a
signal boost). Please note that a volume setting
of zero (0dB) means unity gain, which could be
quite loud (depending on your source).
When you put the preamplifier in Standby mode
it will remember your last selected source and its
volume setting. When you power up again (by
pressing "Standby") the unit will come back to
your last selected source and will be muted.
However, as soon as un-muted (either by
pressing the mute button or by raising the
volume), the preamplifier will jump to the last
volume setting. This feature is intended as a
convenience but please keep it in mind when you
wake the preamplifier from Standby mode.
Mute
Press the MUTE button to temporarily mute
the VOLUME to 0. When activating the MUTE
function "MUTE" will readout in the display.
Switching mute on and off can be done by either
pushing the MUTE button momentarily on the
OMEGA SERIES PRE-AMPLIFIER faceplate or on
the remote handset. The volume setting will
remain the same when the unit is in mute mode;
thus Volume will return to the same level it was
playing at prior to muting when you turned off
MUTE mode.
PLEASE NOTE: The display will change to Display
Full Off mode after the unit has been in MUTE
mode for an hour.
PLEASE NOTE: When the OMEGA SERIES PRE-
AMPLIFIER is in mute mode, and the volume
control is turned up using the volume control on
the remote or the unit, the play mode will be
automatically selected.
CAUTION: When changing any input or outputs
the pre-amplifier must be turned off and
unplugged from AC. All the associated
amplifier(s) and other electronics must be
turned off.
Remote Handset
The remote handset will permit you to access
remotely all the functions found on the front
panel of the unit: VOLUME UP or DOWN,
BALANCE LEFT or RIGHT, MUTE ON or OFF,
DIRECT ACCESS for all the INPUTS. In addition to
all these functions, the button marked DISP will
permit you to select through the four Display
modes on the unit.
PLEASE NOTE that the DISPLAY function can
only be accessed with the remote handset.
To access the batteries, unscrew the back plate of
the remote handset.
AMP: (on remote handset only)
The AMP button may be used to turn the
OMEGA SERIES AMPLIFIER(s) ON and OFF.
Standby
Pressing the STANDBY BUTTON on the remote
handset permits you to partially shut down
the unit while keeping important parts of the
circuitry warmed up.
BAL1 – LINE 3: (on remote handset only)
Pressing each of these six buttons directly
accesses the associated input on the
pre-amplifier.
Display: (on remote handset only)
Pressing the DISP button on the remote
handset allows you to control the brightness
of the display. There are 4 levels of brightness:
Display Full On, Display Medium On, Display
Low On or Display.
Full Off. Repeated pressing of the DISP button
will cycle through the four modes, from Display
Full On to Display Full Off. Pressing DISP when
the display is at Full Off will cause the display to
go back to Display Full On.
