The European directive 2002/96/EC on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE),
requires t hat o ld h ousehold e lectrical a ppliances m ust n ot b e d isposed o f i n t he n ormal u nsorted
municipal waste stream. Old appliances must be collected separately in order to optimize the
recovery a nd r ecycling o f t he m aterials t hey c ontain, a nd r educe t he i mpact o n h uman h ealth a nd
the e nvironment.
