Installation & Maintenance Information
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE
APPLICATION
PowerGard Receptacles are used where power is to be supplied
to portable electrical equipment, such as compressors, tools and
lighting systems in hazardous and/or corrosive environments.
The CFS Receptacle can be operated by a Crouse-Hinds series
ENP Plug or Appleton ECP Plug. PowerGard Receptacles mount
INSTALLATION
WARNING
To avoid risk of electric shock, electrical supply power must
be OFF during installation and maintenance. Installation and
maintenance procedures must be performed by a trained
and competent electrician.
CFS Receptacles may be installed in areas classified as Class I,
Group B locations when mounted on a single gang CFD box
equipped with EYS sealing fittings mounted immediately adjacent
to the box (close nippled). Also, CFS Receptacles may be installed
in areas classified as Class I, Groups C, D and Class II, Groups F , G
on single or double gang CFD/CFDC boxes.
CFS Receptacles may be installed in areas classified as Class
I, Division 2, Groups B, C, D locations when mounted on an
enclosure that is suitable for the area.
Approved temperature ranges by area classification are as follows:

For Class I, Division 1 Installations:
1.
Mount back box in desired position following methods that
comply with NEC and any local codes. Back box must be
installed in vertical position (shown in Figure 3) to maintain
environmental rating.
WARNING
To avoid risk of explosion, conduit sealing fittings MUST BE
installed in Class I, Group B locations to comply with the
requirements in the latest edition of the NEC, Section 501
and/or 502 plus any other applicable standards. Sealing
fittings must be close nippled to the enclosure.
CAUTION
To prevent overheating, use only copper or copper-clad wire
with this receptacle.

when installed with a gasket and the standard flip cover.
For Class I, Division 1 or Division 2 Installations:
1.
Pull all supply wiring into back box. Be sure wires are
long enough to make proper connections. Use wire sizes
specified in Table 2.

on single or double gang CFD back boxes from both Crouse-Hinds
and Appleton (see detailed intermateability charts in Tables 3 and
4).
PowerGard Receptacles are rated 20 amperes, 125 or 250 VAC
and 15 amperes, 125 VAC. Actual operation must comply with the
information stipulated on the unit nameplate.
2.
Strip supply conductors to 0.5 inch (13mm). Loosen
terminal screws and slip wire under saddle clamp. If
desired, spade wire terminals may be used. Do not fully
remove terminal screws. Connect the black wire to the
unmarked screw. Connect the white wire to the screw
in the terminal marked WHT (see Figure 2). Connect the
ground wire to the screw in the terminal marked spacing
GND. Do not loosen or tamper with ground strap screw.
Tighten all terminal screws to 15 lb.-in. (1.7 N•m) torque.

3.
Push wiring into back box. Place receptacle on back box
and insert mounting screws. Tighten screws to 30 lb.-in.
(3.4 N•m).
WARNING
To avoid risk of explosion and to maintain environmental
rating, keep cover screws tight when in operation. Only use
screws supplied with the assembly or Crouse-Hinds series
replacement screws.
CAUTION
To avoid the risk of electrical shock and to maintain the
environmental rating, the cover must be closed when the plug
is not engaged with the receptacle.
HOW TO OPERATE
1.
Lift receptacle door and locate polarization on mating plug
and receptacle face.
2.
Insert plug into receptacle as far as it will go.
3.
Maintain pressure on plug and turn it clockwise as far as it
will go. Internal contacts of the receptacle are closed by this
action and complete the electrical circuit.
4.
Release plug, allowing it to move outwardly, slightly into a
locking detent position.
5.
To remove plug, press inward, turn counterclockwise as far
as it will go, and pull straight out.
MAINTENANCE
Perform visual, electrical and mechanical checks of all components
on a regular schedule. This should be determined by the environment
and frequency of use, but it is recommended that it should be at
least once a year.
1.
Make sure screws holding receptacle to back box are tight.
2.
Clean receptacle face with cloth dampened with water.
3.
Inspect face plate for damage.
WARNING
To avoid risk of explosion, if any part of the receptacle appears
to be broken or shows signs of any damage - DISCONTINUE
USE IMMEDIATELY. Replace or properly repair the item
BEFORE continuing service.
Figure 1
Replace devices if the flat machined surface is damaged,
scratched, dented or corroded. Field re-work of flat machined
surfaces is not possible.
In addition to these required maintenance procedures, we
recommend an Electrical Preventive Maintenance Program as
described in the National Fire Protection Association Bulletin
NFPA 70B: Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment
Maintenance (www.nfpa.org).
