• SAFETY GOGGLES - Safety goggles or full face shields worn over safety glasses with side shield must be worn
by operators and all others in the area of power brush operations. Safety goggles and shields must comply with the
requirements of ANSI Z87.1, "Occupational Eye and Face Protection."
• GLOVES - Wear sturdy, puncture-resistant work gloves when handling, installing, or removing the Crack Chaser
wheel.
• PROTECTIVE CLOTHING - Wear clothing that provides protection from flying debris and pieces of wire.
• BREATHING PROTECTION - Wear a face mask or respirator that provides protection from hazardous dust par-
ticles that may be produced when cleaning. Face masks and respirators must comply with the requirements of ANSI
Z88.2, "Respiratory Protection."
• GUARDS - Never operate Crack Chaser unless all guards are in place.
• SPEED - Never exceed the maximum safe free speed (MSFS) stamped on the wheel hub in RPM (revolutions per
minute). Crack Chasers may be used on all Echo Edgers listed on page 1. NEVER use Crack Chaser attachment on
any other type of Echo equipment.
• FLYING DEBRIS - Material being cleaned by the Crack Chaser, including dirt, chips, and small particles, may fly off
the brush as soon as it is started, along with pieces of wire that have broken off during use. NEVER operate the Crack
Chaser unless the operator and all bystanders within 15 m (50 ft.) are wearing the protective gear described above.
• SET-UP - Inspect brush before installing on unit. DO NOT use brushes that are excessively or unevenly worn, or that
are rusted or corroded. Make sure brush arbor matches diameter of adapter plate on unit. Always secure brush lock
nut on shaft with a new cotter pin when installing or changing brushes.
• START UP - NEVER stand in front of or in line with the brush when starting the brush. Allow brush to run at operat-
ing speed for one minute before beginning cleaning operations to check for flutter or vibration. If brush flutters or
vibrates, stop unit immediately, and inspect for brush damage and improper installation. Discard brush if damaged, or
if worn unevenly or excessively.
• OPERATION - DO NOT apply excessive pressure to brush. Move edger forward, allowing brush speed and the
sharpness of the wire tips to do the work. Pressure is excessive if the wire strands are visibly bending during opera-
tion, or the unit is being forced to move forward. ALWAYS hold edger securely with two hands, with fingers wrapped
firmly around handles.
• CREVICE WIDTH - Never force a Crack Chaser wheel into a crack or crevice that is smaller that the width of the
brush. The Crack Chaser brush face when new is 4.8 mm (3/16 in.) wide.
• CLEANING DEPTH - NEVER allow side plates of the Crack Chaser to make contact with a edges of crack. Maxi-
mum cleaning depth should be limited to no more than 3/4 of the exposed length of wire filaments. On a new brush,
maximum cleaning depth is 25 mm (1 in.).
• WIRE FILAMENT WEAR - Minimum wire filament length is 13 mm (1/2 in.) . Discard wheel when filaments
wear shorter than this minimum length. A wheel with 13 mm (1/2 in.) filament length must not be used to clean crev-
ices and cracks deeper than 1 cm (3/8 in.).
• BRUSH REMOVAL - Brush may become hot during use. Allow brush to cool before removing. Clean any debris
remaining on wheel with a stiff brush. Spray a light coating of aerosol rust-preventative such as WD-40 on brush.
Store brush on its side to prevent bending of wire filaments, and keep in a dry location.
