The V
Refractometer is designed for testing the concentration of salt water and brine and is used for quality control in the marine industry and in
research and clinical laboratories. The V

Instructions for Calibration
1. Remove the protective black rubber cap (3) which is covering the calibration screw (4).
2. Open the cover plate (2) and place 2-3 drops of distilled water on the main prism (1), using the supplied pipette (8).
3. Close the cover plate (2) and press it lightly so the water spreads across the entire surface of the prism (1) without air bubbles or dry spots.
4. Allow the sample to remain on the prism (1) for approximately 30 seconds.
5. Aim the front of the refractometer in the direction of bright light, and adjust the eyepiece (6) by turning it until the scale can be seen clearly.
6. Using the calibrating screwdriver (7) adjust the calibration screw (4) until the light/dark boundary coincides with the zero line.
Please note: As this refractometer has Automatic Temperature Compensation all adjustments should be made when the ambient temperature is

approx 20
C (68
F) i.e room temperature. When the ambient temperature changes by more than 5°F, we recommend recalibration to maintain accuracy.
7. Replace the protective black rubber cap (3) onto the calibration screw (4).

Instructions for Use
1. Open the cover plate (2). Dry the surface of the prism (1) with a moist, soft cloth. Place 2-3 drops of the solution to be measured on the prism (1),
using the pipette supplied (8).
2. Close the cover plate (2) and press it lightly, then aim the front of the refractometer in the direction of bright light, and adjust the eyepiece (6) by
turning it until the scale can be seen clearly.
3. Read the corresponding scale of the light/dark boundary. The reading is the value of the measured solution.
4. After measurement, clean away the measured solution from the surface of the prism (1) and cover plate (2) using a moist, soft cloth. After drying the
refractometer should be stored in its case.
Usage Notes
1. The distilled water (used for calibration) and the solution to be measured should be at the same ambient temperature. If the temperature fluctuates
considerably, the zero line should be adjusted once every 30 minutes.
2. To prevent water entering the refractometer, make sure you do not use water to wash it after use.
3. As this refractometer is a precision optical instrument, it should be treated with care. Do not touch or scratch the optical surfaces and store in a dry,
clean and non-corrosive environment to prevent the surface becoming mouldy or cloudy. Please ensure it is not dropped or subject to any impact
during transportation.
If used according to these instructions this refractometer should offer trouble-free, long-term service with no deterioration in optical performance.
