PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
PestWest EFK units have been designed to European
highest standards and are manufactured from quality
materials. All European models have been tested and
certified for compliance with the Safety Standard
EN60335-2-59. This standard is specifically for
electrocuting flying insect control equipment. Please
read these instructions carefully and keep them for
future reference. Your fly killer has been designed and
constructed using top quality materials and if installed
correctly and kept clean, will operate reliably and safely
for many years. The Titan Alpha unit may be operated as
a freestanding unit or alternatively either wall-mounted
or suspended. The necessary parts are included to
convert units to the different mounting modes.
UNPACKING YOUR UNIT
Each unit is carefully inspected and packed before
leaving our factory. Before discarding the outer carton,
examine for obvious evidence of transport damage.
Pay particular attention to the removal of all packing
materials. Rough handling in transportation can cause
2
the lamps or catchtray to become dislodged. Please
ensure that these are properly fitted as otherwise
the unit may not operate. The interlock and lighting
circuit are series connected, and all items need to be
operational or none of them will work.
SITING THE UNIT
Electric fly killers (EFKs) operate on the principle whereby
flying insects are attracted to light, particularly to the
ultra-violet (UV-A) range. However, the efficiency of
an EFK can be affected by the intensity of other light
sources, whether artificial or daylight. It is therefore
sensible to mount the EFK where competition from such
sources is minimised.
As a general rule:
Wherever possible, mount the unit as ceiling
suspended then they will attract insects from all
directions.
Do not mount adjacent to windows.
The unit should be sited, wherever possible, at 90°
to the major light source, eg: the sunniest window.
In food areas, mount the EFK close to, but not
directly over, exposed food or preparation surfaces.
Mount units where they can be easily accessed for
servicing.
Mount the unit above head height - in the case of
suspended mounting, clear of any traffic e.g. forklift
trucks.
Avoid mounting your EFK in draughts.
Site units near where flies are likely to gain access,
ie: doors opening to the outside, especially dustbin
areas.
For maximum effectiveness, the EFK should be kept
switched on 24 hours a day.
INSTALLATION
All European versions are designed to operate from 220-
240 V 50 Hz. UK models, powered from 13-amp ring
main system, are supplied with a cord set, terminated in
a 13-amp plug, and fitted with a 3-amp fuse. Continental
models are supplied with a cord set, terminated with
a schuco plug. Ensure the branch fuse is 16 amps
maximum. The units are supplied with 2 metres of input
cable as standard. If it is necessary to extend this lead, a
competent electrician must do this. Should a moulded-
on plug be removed from the lead supplied, this must be
safely disposed of. Ensure that once installed, the power
lead is adequately secured.
SUSPENDED MODE
Titan Alpha models can be made ready to suspend by
screwing the brass hooks (supplied with the unit) into
the holes in the roof of the unit. Making sure they are
secure. Suspension chains are supplied with the unit.
If these are not of sufficient length then for safety
reasons PestWest recommend that each of the hanging
chains should be of noncorroding material that is
capable of taking at least 15 kg (30 lbs.) each. Only
welded link chains should be used in corrosive/damp
environments. For ease of service and rehanging, it is
recommended that the chain be fitted with a spring
release clip at the end connected to the fly killer,
ensuring that they also are capable of supporting 15 kg
each.
WALL-MOUNTING
Select the optimum position for the unit using the
guidelines given (see "Siting"). Using the wall bracket
supplied as a template, mark off the two fixing points on
the mounting surface, having checked that the bracket is
level. Using the screws and plastic plugs provided, fix the
bracket in place, making sure that the mounting lip of
the bracket is uppermost. If the wall is of plasterboard or
stud partition etc, suitable blind fixings must be used to
ensure that the unit will be securely positioned. Hook the
Titan Alpha onto the mounting lip of the bracket so that
it is fixed under the rear lip of the lid. Secure the power
cord to the wall or other firm surface prior to connecting
to the supply.
CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
SWITCH OFF THE MACHINE BEFORE SERVICING OR
CLEANING
It is suggested, to make servicing easier that the unit
is placed on a flat surface. Apart from lamp and starter
replacement, the only maintenance is to keep the unit
clean and empty any dead insects from the catch tray, as
often as required. Wipe the body of the unit with a cloth
dampened with warm water and mild detergent. Do not
use abrasives such as steel wool or metal scouring pads.
REMOVING THE CATCHTRAY
To remove the catch tray push in the clips located on
each side of the catch tray/body of the unit. The tray
will release from the body and drop down. To refit the
catch tray, position the body of the unit above the tray
and drop down until a click is heard on either side.
Ensure the tray is secure before connecting electricity.
CLEANING THE KILLING GRID
Access to the killing grid is gained by removing the catch
tray and UV lamps from the unit. Clean with a mild
detergen t and/or cloth. Care should be taken not to
dislodge the PTFE (plastic white) strips that hold the grid
parts together. Ensure that the grid is thoroughly dry
before reconnecting electricity.
CHANGING THE LAMPS
Insects are attracted to the unit by UV light
emitted by the lamps. This light, which is
invisible to the human eye, reduces with time,
even though to us the lamp does not appear to change.
To maintain efficiency, we recommend annual
replacement.
SWITCH OFF THE MACHINE BEFORE SERVICING
Access to the lamps can be gained by removing the
catch tray - see instructions. Rotate each lamp a quarter
turn until the pins are level with the slot in the lamp
holder. Slide the lamp out of the lamp holder. Replace
with new lamps using reversal procedure.
LAMP TYPE
130-000186 – 15 Watt PestWest Quantum BL
T5 12" 368nm UV-A lamps. Replace the lamps only with
the correct type. For example, do not use germicidal
lamps because they operate at a different wavelength,
which is hazardous to the eye and skin.
STARTER CHANGE
SWITCH OFF THE MACHINE BEFORE SERVICING
Access to the starters can be gained by removing the
catch tray and UV-A lamps from the unit. The starters are
located inside the unit and are fitted into the top metal
plate in the roof of the unit. Rotate each starter
anticlockwise and pull out. Replacement starters should
be: FS22 or S2 Series starters.
COVERAGE
In general terms, the brighter the surrounding light, the
larger the light output necessary from the EFK and the
greater the number of units required for a given area.
For average indoor lighting conditions, the following
guidelines have been found successful:
MAXIMUM COVERAGE (FLOOR AREA) Suspended/
Freestanding mode - 160m
Wall-mounted mode - 80m
2
Coverage is greater when suspended as the unit will
attract insects from all angles, when wall-mounted the
area of coverage will be reduced.
