3. Connections
Inputs
Balancead through female XLR-3 (Pin 2+, 3-, 1 shield).
GE channels are named as Channel A (up) and Channel B
(down). Take always into account to maintain the Stereo signal
respecting Left and Right channels. Identify the channels to
avoid swapping them in any point of the installation.
4. Operation
Before starting, set the band and gain control to its central
position (0 dB). Set the Limiter control to their maximum po-
sition (+12dB). Verify the input and output connections by ta-
king signal from the sound source through the GE, and chec-
king that it arrives with no modification at the power amplifier.
This process allows checking the automatic bypass when the
equalizer is powered off.
Once this function is verified, switch on the unit and check the
delayed start. No peak should be listened through the louds-
peakers. With the band controls at 0 dB, check the working
of each channel gain control by moving it to -12dB to +6dB.
Check the INPUT level indicators. It is highly recommended
that the +6dB indicator is not continuously lit, since this could
derive in a reduction of the dynamic range at the output. The
optimal position for the Gain control is when in normal working
conditions the 0dB led is lit almost continuously and the +6dB
led only occasionally.
Press the EQ On switch. No change will be listened, as all the
controls are in central position. Move the band controls and
you will clearly listen to the modification you are introducing.
The switch EQ On can be used to quickly compare between
the flat response and the EQ adjust. Press the Range switch if
you need an adjust range of +/-12dB instead of +/-6dB. Pres-
sing again this key, it returns again to +/-6dB range, which
gives more precision to the adjustment.
Now proceed to adjust the equalizer depending of the res-
ponse you require. It is convenient for this operation to use a
spectrum analyzer with its sound source (pink noise) in order
to modify the response of the system with maximum precision
and accuracy.
During the adjustment, consider the Output Level and Limiter
indicators. The 0dB led is lit when the output is of 1V nomi-
nal, and the +6dB when the output reaches 2V. The maximum
output range is determined by the position of the Limiter po-
tentiometer. If the limiter led is lit continuously, it is possible
that some bands have been excessively reinforced. In this
case, look at the frequency response and try to attenuate the
signal corresponding to the most reinforced band. If this is not
possible, you can attenuate the general level using the Gain
Outputs
Balanced through male XLR-3 (Pin 2+, 3-, 1 shield) with lock
system to avoid accidental disconnection.
IMPORTANT: When balanced signal is not available, NE-
VER connect Pin 1 to Pin 3 at the XLR connector. In that
case Pin 1 should be left unconnected, Pin 2 will be the
"live" conductor and Pin 3 the return or shield
control. It is not advisable to work with the limiter indicator con-
tinuously lit.
Once the desired response is reached, compare it with the
original signal activating repeatedly the EQ on/off switch, to
check the result obtained. Readjust if necessary until you get
the optimum response.
Finally, if the maximum output level of the system needs to
be adjusted, turn the Limiter potentiometer counterclockwise.
However, remember that you should avoid working with the
limiter led continuously lit, since this means losing the dyna-
mics of the audio signal.
To obtain the best results, remember always the practical advi-
ce, that is better to subtract the superfluous frequencies rather
that to add.
