4. OPERATION
The UL-924 Emergency relay is a shunt bypass device that will automatically bypass to
Emergency power on when normal power is lost to the Black/White normal power monitoring
leads.
The Normal power switching control input (Orange wire) will allow the EM20 relay to track the
on/off state of the controlled normal power lighting and follow the normal lighting on/off
operation, switching the emergency powered lighting on/off based on the state of the normal
lighting.
The Blue switch loop wire can be cut for a normally-closed local test switch, or connection to a
fire alarm or security alarm system output. When this closure is open it will force the EM20 relay
to an on-emergency state overriding normal control. Test switch or Alarm system contact -
Normally Closed Isolated Dry contact rated for .5 Amps at 12VDC, if multiple test or alarm
contacts are used, wire them in parallel positive-positive, negative-negative. Note: Up to 6 EM20
relays can be connected in series to one switch or dry contact.
Note:
Normal power to the EM20 relay, and the lighting controller must all be on the same
branch circuit if 0-10V dimming bypass operation is required at the control relay. When normal
power is lost to the controller for the 0-10V dimming output it will automatically defaulting to
100% non-dim state.
5. LABELING
Label all wire connection and record the circuit number for both Normal and Emergency power
for future maintenance.
6. TESTING AND MAINTENANCE
Test the EM20 relay by shutting off the normal power circuit breaker to simulate a "BLACK OUT"
the EM20 relay should automatically turn-on and no longer respond to the orange control input.
When normal power is returned the EM20 should return to normal operation and follow
control.
Testing the "Blue wire loop" test switch operation by pressing the test button or triggering an
open state at the alarm system contact.
The EM20 is a maintenance free unit, however, periodic inspection and testing is required.
NFPA 101, Life Safety Code and local ordinances will outline these requirements, Monthly – test
the EM20 relay on a schedule, "Written records of the test shall be kept by owner for inspection
by the authority having jurisdiction"
