7. Place the pencil guide on the pencil with the desired end (17 or
24) directed down towards the pencil lead.
8. Mark out the pattern by allowing the pencil guide to follow the
inside edge of the selected pattern.
9. Rotate the template to the next desired position (determined by the
rotation interval indicated in the Design Guide). Repeat step 8.
Repeat rotation until the template is returned to its original 12
o'clock position and the design is complete.
ROUT A DESIGN
NOTE: Follow your router Manufacturer's guidelines for proper
routing procedures.
1. For safety, and to ensure maximum template performance, the
base plate must be securely held to the work piece surface.
2. Align the template so the selected pattern is in the 12 o'clock
position and secure the template in place by pushing the tem-
plate cogs into the appropriate base plate grooves.
3. Install an appropriate router bit (sold separately) to the router
(see your router manufacturer's guidelines for this step).
4. Install the appropriate guide bushing (see Helpful Hints) to the
TurnLock Router Base by twisting the guide bushing into the
TurnLock mechanism at the center of the base.
5. Set the router to an appropriate depth (see Helpful Hints) (see your
router manufacturer's guidelines for this step).
6. Bring the router bit and guide bushing into the selected pattern
window.
7. Switch on the router.
8. Mark out the pattern in a clockwise direction while allowing the
guide bushing to follow the outside edge of the selected pattern.
9. Switch off the router and remove the router from the pattern window.
10. Rotate the template to the next desired position (determined by
the rotation interval indicated in the Design Guide) and repeat
steps 6 through 9. Repeat until the template is returned to its
original 12 o'clock position and the design is complete.

DESIGNS
All Designs made with Template #1
The router bits (sold separately) most
commonly used with the Design Template Kit
are V-Groove, Straight, and Round Nose (or
Core Box). The chosen bit must be smaller
than the guide bushing (17mm or 24mm).

CREATE ADDITIONAL DESIGNS
The best way to create more designs is simply to experiment with
your Design Template Kit. It is best to try a new design on paper
before routing, painting, or permanently marking.
Some suggestions for creating more complex designs are:
• Vary the bit depth, type of bit, rotation interval, or guide bushing size.
• Use combinations of two or more different pattern windows to
create one design.
• Trace only a portion of a particular pattern window.
CREATE CUTOUTS OR LACEWORK
To create cutouts or lacework, the bit depth should be greater than
the thickness of the work material, and scrap material should be
placed beneath the work material. Trace designs on paper before
routing. Not all designs will produce a cutout.
HELPFUL HINTS
Guide Bushing Size: The 24mm guide bushing will produce a
less intricate design while the 17mm bushing will follow the pattern
more closely.
Bit Depth: To create a design on the work material, make sure the
depth selected is less than the thickness of the work material. To
create cutouts or lacework, the depth selected should be greater than
the thickness of the work material. Scrap material should be placed
beneath the work material to ensure your work surface is not harmed.
Router Bits (sold separately): Different bits will produce different
looks. The bits most commonly used are: V-Groove, Straight, and
Round Nose (or Core Box). The chosen bit must be smaller than the
guide bushing (17mm or 24mm).
Controlling Cutting Depth: Cut no deeper than 3/8-in. on any
single pass. Use multiple passes for deeper cuts.
Protecting Delicate Lacework & Cutouts: Place masking tape
over work piece edges to help prevent narrow extensions from
breaking when the bit is withdrawn.
Creating your own designs: The designs provided will help you
become comfortable with using your router in making designs. Once
you have done a few of these designs, feel free to start creating
your own designs with the provided pencil and pencil guide.
