Starter Installation
NOTE: Follow the installation instructions that came with this replacement starter.
1. Remove the flywheel/flexplate inspection cover and completely inspect the flywheel/
flexplate for damage.
CAUTION: It will be necessary to replace the flywheel/flexplate if any damage is noted.
2. Mount the Starter
a. Be sure all old shims have been removed from the engine block mounting pad.
b. Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces between the starter mounting pad and the
engine block mounting pad (including removal of paint) to help achieve proper
alignment and adjustment.
c. Mount the starter and properly torque the fasteners.
CAUTION: All original equipment mounting brackets must be reinstalled to maintain starter
alignment during use.
CAUTION: Do not operate the starter until the
starter pinion to flywheel/flexplate clearance has
been properly adjusted.
Clearance Check
I. Starter Pinion to Flywheel/Flexplate
Clearance Check
a. Extend the starter pinion out until the
pinion shaft lies along the teeth of the
flywheel/flexplate.
b. Line up one tooth of the flywheel/
flexplate perpendicular to the pinion
shaft to achieve the smallest gap.
c. Using the wire gauge (included), check
the clearance between the side of the
pinion shaft and the flywheel/flexplate
tooth. (See Fig. 1)
In some instances of pad mount starter installation, it may be necessary
to shim the starter between the starter mounting pad and the engine
block mounting pad to achieve proper starter pinion to flywheel/flexplate
clearance. Follow the instructions below to properly make the adjustment.
