Please note
This tool can be used to separate motorcycle chains with a thickness between 35 and 525.
When working with chains, make sure to wrap a cloth round any loose parts so that these parts do
not fall down.
SEPARATING A CHAIN
1. Assemble the tool as shown in the illustration.
2. Select the separating tip (2, 3 or 4) that is suitable for the chain with which you would like to work.
3. Remove the pressure spindle (1), insert the appropriate separating tip underneath the separating
tip head by means of the spring (6) and mount the pressure spindle again.
4. Please note: When working with the 2.2 mm separating tip, the upper and lower separating tip
guides are to be used. In this way, you can prevent the separating tip from bending or breaking.
The upper guide is mounted at the bottom of the alignment bolt (15). The lower guide is inserted
into the tool body from above. The 2.2 mm separating tip is to be used especially when working
with small chains. The 2.9 mm separating tip is to be used for chains with a thickness of 35, and
the 3.8 mm separating tip for motorcycle chains (428 to 525).
5. Mount the tool onto the chain as shown in the illustration. The tip is to be retracted into the
alignment bolt at least 2 mm. The end of the chain rivet is to be brought underneath the alignment
bolt of the tool, and the open side of the chain rivet into the hole of the separating tool. Now,
attach the separating tool to the chain.
6. Now, tension the tool by turning the lever or by means of a size 14 wrench, until the rivet leaves
the chain joint. The rivet will fall out through the aperture of the separating tool. Release the
pressure bolt again and take off the tool. If necessary, remove both rivets of the chain joint.
Please note:
When tensioning the separating tool, make sure the rivet detaches from the chain joint slowly. If this is
not the case, check whether the alignment bolt is mounted properly. If this is not the case, repeat the
step described under item 3.
MOUNTING A CHAIN LOCK
1. Assemble the chain that is to be riveted in a way so that the two chain joints that are to be
connected are positioned next to each other. Make sure the tubular rivet chain lock you use is
new and suitable. The rivets of the tubular rivet chain lock are by all means to be completely
driven through the joints that are to be connected and through the tubular rivet chain lock flap.
This can be performed by using the pre-tensioning plate (7) and the backing plate (9) together
with the riveting tool. Position the chain and tension the pressure spindle until the rivets of the
chain lock are completely driven through the joints and the flap.
2. Release the pressure spindle (1) and take off the pre-tensioning plate (7) and the backing plate
(9) from the tool body (13).
3. Insert the riveting tip (5) and the appropriate anvil (11 or 12) into the tool body.
4. Align the chain in the tool correctly (see illustration).
5. Tighten the pressure spindle firmly by means of the lever or a size 14 wrench. The end of the
rivet is to riveted through the riveting tip in a way so that, after the riveting process, the flap
remains securely put on the rivet of the chain lock. Repeat this step with the second chain lock
rivet and then check the position of the chain lock flap.
6. Remove the tool, take the chain aside and check whether both rivets are riveted in the same
way.
