Working procedure
Calculation of the acceleration due to gravity
-
Connect the "9 V DC" output socket of digital counter to "9 V DC"
input sockets of free fall stand using patch cords.
-
Connect the "Electromagnet" sockets of the digital counter to the
electromagnet sockets of the free fall stand, using patch cords.
-
Connect the "Sensor plate" sockets of the digital counter to the
"To Timer" sockets of the free fall stand, using patch cords.
-
Plug-in the power cord with an input voltage of 90-240 V AC.
-
Put into contact the metallic ball with the electromagnet
(solenoid) mounted on the free fall stand. Due to magnetization,
the electromagnet will hold the metallic ball.
-
Press the corresponding button in the digital counter to release
the ball from the electromagnet.
-
Once the ball is released, the timer will start and the ball will fall
on the sensor plate of free fall stand.
-
Impact sensor placed in the platform will send a pulse from free
fall stand to the digital counter to stop the timer.
-
Read out the timer taken by the ball between releasing from
electromagnet and fall on sensor plate.
-
Fill in below table with obtained data

Formula used
2
S = ut + ½ at
Where S is the initial distance between the metallic ball and the sensor
plate
t, time taken by the ball to reach the sensor plate once it is released from
the electromagnet
u, initial speed of the ball
a, acceleration of the metallic ball; in this case a = g since it is a free fall
vertical movement
As the initial speed of metallic ball is zero, therefore

S = ½ gt
→ g = 2s/t
Press reset switch after every observation to obtain accurate results.
Use digital timer as a stopwatch
-
Do not connect the free fall stand with the digital counter
-
Plug in the power cord with an input voltage of 90-240 V AC
