Recommended installation locations for smoke alarms:
The installation of smoke detectors is recommended in the following rooms (see Fig.3):
1. Cellar
2. Nursery
3. Bedroom
4. Attic space
5. Working room
6. Bathroom
7. Living room
8. Stairwell
Bedrooms: Install a smoke alarm in every bedroom!
▪
Corridors: Install a device in each corridor that leads to a bedroom. If the corridor is longer than 9m, install a
▪
device at the beginning and end of the corridor.
Stairwell: Install a smoke detector on each floor in the stairwell. Smoke and flames can spread particularly
▪
strongly in stairwells!
Living and working rooms as well as storage areas.
▪
Cellar. Mount a smoke alarm detector in the entrance area to the basement.
▪
Rooms with electrical equipment
▪
Attics: When installing smoke alarms on pitched roofs, ensure a minimum distance of 0.5m-1m from the top
▪
of the roof (see Figure 4).
Attics with horizontal ceiling: see Figure 5 for installation
▪
Mount smoke detectors at least 0.5m away from lamps!
▪
Install several smoke alarms in large corridors or large rooms. Observe a maximum distance of 15m!
▪
Install smoke alarms in narrow corridors or rooms no larger than 1m wide in the middle of the ceiling.
▪
Unsuitable mounting locations for smoke alarms:
Rooms with high humidity, e.g. in the bathroom
▪
Garages or kitchens. In the kitchen should be installed a smoke alarm should only if the distance to the
▪
stove is at least 4m.
Smoke detectors should not be installed near heating, heating, cooling and ventilation shafts.
▪
On ceiling beams that are lager than 0.2m
▪
Near open fires or fireplaces
▪
In very dusty rooms.
▪
On A-shaped roofs, the smoke detector must not be mounted at the highest point.
▪
Rooms which have a room temperature below 5°C or above 40°C.
▪
In caravans or rooms with a low ceiling height. Since the air heats up strongly in the upper area due to, for
▪
example, intensive solar radiation in summer, the smoke is prevented from rising to trigger the alarm of the
smoke detector.
