21 Troubleshooting Guide
21.1 Trimmer / Brushcutter
Many performance issues can be resolved with a few simple steps. When troubleshooting, STIHL recommends that you start
with the following measures:
► Replace the air filter, @ 21.2.
► Clean or replace the spark plug, @ 21.3.
► As appropriate for conditions, set the trimmer's "shutter" for winter or summer operation, @ 15.3 or @ 15.4.
► If these measures do not resolve the issue, continue to the steps described below.
Always shut off the engine before carrying out any inspection, cleaning or maintenance.
Condition
The engine does not start. There is insufficient fuel in the fuel tank.
The engine idles
erratically.
The engine stops while
idling.
The engine does not reach
maximum speed.
The fuel tank is not
completely emptied.

Possible Cause
The carburetor is too hot.
The carburetor is iced up.
The carburetor is iced up.

The throttle cable is not set correctly.
The trimmer / brushcutter is not properly
calibrated to the ambient conditions.
The pick-up body / filter inside the fuel tank is
not in place.

Remedy
► Refuel the trimmer / brushcutter, @ 10.2.
► Cool down the trimmer / brushcutter.
► Before starting the engine. Press the manual
fuel pump bulb at least ten times – even if the
bulb is filled with fuel.
► Allow the engine to warm up gradually to a
temperature of about 50 °F (10 °C).

► Adjusting the throttle cable, @ 21.4.
► Calibrate the trimmer / brushcutter, @ 15.2.
