The VIB 3.550 limiting device is used as current
and voltage limiting interface between a mea-
suring system installed outside the Ex zone and
intrinsically safe sensors installed at machines
inside the Ex zone.
Responsibility
Every Ex operation has an Ex protection officer.
He knows, which conditions and standards
must be observed in his operation. Only expert
personnel briefed by him may work in the plant.
The following suggested installation must be
approved by the Ex protection officer.
Safety Information
• Read the operating instructions carefully and
store them at the installation location of the
limiting device.
• Observe the operating instructions of the con-
nected devices.
• Read and observe the safety information in
these operating instructions!
• Only use the limiting device as intended and
for the permitted purpose of application.
• We shall not be liable for damage caused by
faulty or impermissible use or non-compliance
with these operating instructions.
• Make sure that the limiting device is undam-
aged prior to installation and commissioning.
• Have work on the limiting device (installation,
troubleshooting) only performed by autho-
rized and respectively trained personnel.
• Observe type and data plates on the limiting
device during installation and operation.
Fluke Deutschland GmbH
•
Consult with
case of operating conditions deviating from
the technical data.
•
The nationally applicable installation and erec-
tion regulations (e.g., IEC/EN 60079-14) apply.
• Install the limiting device outside Ex zones.
• Install the limiting device in a switch cabinet
or housing (at least IP 20).
• The limiting device must be installed at a dis-
tance of at least 50 mm from non-intrinsically
safe circuits.
• Connect potential equalization first. Do not
daisy-chain.
• Wiring to potential equalization: For interfer-
ence protection reasons, a line resistance of
<120 mOhm is recommended (e.g., CU line
with 1.5 mm² cross-section and 10 meter
length).
• Signal analysis unit must be grounded with
potential equalization at the location of the
limiting device.
• The limiting device is the only grounded point
of the intrinsically safe circuit in the EX zone.
• Establish potential equalization between limit-
ing device and monitored machines.
• Do not connect limiting device to operating
equipment, where voltages higher than AC
250 V occur.
• Core lines with a maximum diameter of
4 mm² (rigid) or 2.5 mm² (flexible) may be
connected to the connection terminals. The
tightening torque amounts to 1.0 Nm.
• The safety-related values of the connected
field units must comply with the information
of the EC type-examination certificate EPS 15
ATEX 1 125. The complete EC type-examina-
tion certificate is available at www.pruftech-
nik.com.
• Conversions and modifications are not per-
mitted to the limiting device.
• The limiting device may only be installed and
operated in undamaged, dry, and clean con-
dition.
Repair and Maintenance
• Have repairs on the limiting device only
in the
per-formed by
• The limiting device is maintenance-free.
