150-Watt, Self-Ballasted, Super-High-Intensity UV Lamps
1. Read all instructions.
2. Care must be taken as burns can occur from touching hot parts.
3. Do not operate the lamp with a damaged cord or if the lamp has been damaged.
4. Do not let the cord hang over edge of table, bench or counter, or come in contact
with hot manifolds or moving fan blades.
5. To protect against risk of fire, do not operate the lamp in the vicinity of open
containers of fuel (gasoline).
6. Adequate ventilation should be provided when working on operating combustion
engines.
INTRODUCTION
1. Ultraviolet lamps perform best in low-light, indoor conditions.
2. Do not look directly into the UV light. Wear UV-absorbing protective eyewear (such as
the UVS-30 spectacles or the UVG-50 goggles) when operating this or any UV lamp.
3. Unfiltered UV can be hazardous to the eyes and skin. Never operate the lamp
with the UV filter removed.
OPERATION
1. Install the UV bulb (packed separately). See instructions in "BULB/FILTER
INSTALLATION OR REPLACEMENT."
2. Connect the plug to a power outlet that complies with the electrical requirements
specified on the lamp's label.
3. Turn ON the lamp to start. Allow approximately 3-5 minutes for the lamp to reach full
lighting intensity. If the lamp fails to light, check that the bulb is completely screwed
into the socket.
4. When the lamp is used intermittently at frequent intervals, leave the lamp burning
continuously rather than turning it on and off repeatedly. This extends the bulb life and
avoids the restarting delay.
5. Any interruption in the power supply, such as an excessive drop in voltage, will cause
the bulb to go out. If the lamp has been recently shut off, wait at least 4 minutes for
the bulb to cool down before trying to turn the lamp on again.
6. CAUTION: The lamp housing and filter will become hot during continuous
operation. Do not touch these components. The HGS-150A heat guard/stand
is attached to the unit for increased protection. It should not be removed during
operation.
NOTE: If the lamp fails to operate, review the procedure outlined above.
BULB/FILTER INSTALLATION OR REPLACEMENT
Use only a Spectroline Built-In-Ballast™ UV bulb. Use of any other bulb may
damage the unit and will void the warranty.
1. Remove the Phillips screw attaching the HGS-150A heat guard/stand to the lamp.
Squeeze the stand near the handle to release the hook. Remove the stand and set it
aside.
2. Detach the silicone-rubber filter holder by peeling it from around the circumference of
the lamp housing. The filter will remain inside the filter holder. (If replacing the filter,
press it firmly but gently inside the filter holder.) Set the filter holder aside.
3. Place the UV bulb through the Bulb-Saver™/collar in the lamp housing. Turn the bulb
clockwise gently but firmly into the socket with the fingertips. (If removing an existing
bulb, turn it counterclockwise.)
4. Reattach the filter holder by pressing it with the heel of your hand around the circum-
ference of the lamp housing. Be sure the groove in the filter holder seats over the rim
of the housing.
5. Replace the heat guard/stand by reversing the procedure in step 1 above.
MAINTENANCE
CAUTION: Always unplug the lamp from the power outlet before performing any
maintenance or servicing. Allow the UV lamp to cool before handling.
The plastic lamp housing is designed to protect the internal parts. Using a soft cloth,
immediately clean spills from the housing with water and a mild detergent and wipe dry.
Periodically clean the filter with a glass cleaner and a soft cloth.
Do not perform any servicing that is not covered in these instructions. Return the
lamp to the factory for maintenance not covered in this section.
INTENSITY VERIFICATION
To ensure that the lamp is operating at a UV intensity sufficient to meet military and
aerospace specifications, the intensity should be checked periodically. The Spectroline
DM-365X digital radiometer or the DSE-100X digital readout unit are specially designed
to measure long wave UV irradiance in the spectral range from 320-400nm.
NOTE: To measure long wave UV, the DSE-100X must be used with the DIX-365
interchangeable sensor. It can also measure visible light in the spectral range from 380-
760nm by using the DIX-555A or DIX-555A/L interchangeable sensors.
