POSITION FINDING BY RADIO
General
Position-finding by radio enables you to find your position by means
of bearings
on transmitters whose geographical location is known and given on a chart. When
the receiver, after
having been
tuned
to a MW
or LW
transmitter,
is turned
reception
disappears
wholly or partly, due
to the directional
effect
of the
built-in ferroceptor aerial. Reception is minimum when the longitudinal axis of the
receiver is pointing exactly at the transmitter. The transmitter is now situated on
the line in the longitudinal axis of the receiver. When a similar bearing is.repeated
on a second transmitter the receiver is situated on the intersection of the two
lines. When
these lines are drawn on the chart, the position
of the receiver
is
determined by the intersection of the lines on the chart (see page 25).
Accessories
For position finding the following accessories are necessary:
plotter (protractor, supplied with this handbook)
compass
chart, showing the beacon transmitters*
handbooks with data on beacon transmitters where these are not shown on
the chart*
* Available from the agents of the authorities publishing them
