REFRACTOMETER
INTENDED USE:
• determining the freezing point of ethylene glycol aqueous
solutions in cooling systems in cars, trucks, etc.
• determination of the freezing point of water solutions of
propylene glycol in cooling systems in heating/solar installations
• Determination of the electrolyte density in lead-acid batteries,
e.g. used in the automotive industry
• determining the concentration of ADBLUE and the freezing point
of windscreen washer fluid
A refractometer is a sensitive optical instrument used to test the
freezing temperature of coolants and to determine the quality of
the electrolyte in lead-acid batteries. The substances tested are
hazardous to health, so it is absolutely necessary to avoid contact
of the tested liquid with the skin, and for dosing the liquid use only
the enclosed pipette.
DESCRIPTION:
1. Prism
2. Prism cover
3. Calibration screw
4. Handle
5. Viewfinder focusing knob
USE:
After lifting the prism cover (2), apply one or two drops of the fluid
under test with a pipette onto the glass field of the refractometer
(1). Wait about 30 seconds until the temperature of the tested liquid
and the instrument equilibrate. Look into the viewfinder and take a
reading at the boundary between the dark and light areas. On the
left scale read the freezing point (in degrees Celsius) for ethylene
glycol, on the right for propylene glycol, and on the middle scale the
density of the electrolyte (RECHARGE - means it needs to be charged,
and GOOD - does not need to be charged).
After each measurement the measuring field should be carefully
cleaned with a soft cloth.
Do not wash the instrument by flooding it with water - flooded
optics of the instrument will make its further operation impossible.
ATTENTION!
The refractometer is a sensitive optical instrument and only by
taking all measurements gently you can be sure of failure-free and
long-lasting operation.
CALIBRATION:
You should calibrate the refractometer before first use using distilled
water at about 20°C.
To do this, lift the transparent prism cover (2) and place one or two
drops of water on the prism (1) with a pipette. Then close the prism
cover (2) carefully so that no air bubbles form between the flap
and the glass field. Wait about 30 seconds for the water sample to
reach the same temperature as the instrument. Point the end of the
instrument with the prism towards the light source and look into the
viewfinder where you can see the circular measuring field. The upper
part of the measuring field is dark and the lower part is light. Using a
screwdriver, turn the adjusting screw (3) (after removing the rubber
screw cover) until the boundary line between the dark and bright
fields runs along the waterline marked WATERLINE.
