MAINTENANCE
TECHNICAL TIPS ON THE CENTRIFUGAL CLUTCH
The shoes and springs in the clutch are normal wear items. If you notice a decrease in clutch performance, they
should be checked and replaced if necessary.
Your machine's clutch is designed for robust, reliable service. However, it is important to understand the limitations of
a clutch. A clutch is designed to provide no-load starting of the engine and slip under excessive overload of the driven
application. These features help protect the engine from damage, such as broken crankshafts and starters.
The clutch gets its power from the engine RPM. The lower the engagement speed, and the higher the engine speed
maintained, the more torque the clutch can transfer to the driven unit. Do not operate at less than RPM.
When starting the engine, it runs at no load until approximately 1000-1200 RPM, at which point the centrifugal
clutch speed is activated and begins to drive the rotor. The proper rotor speed is 2400 RPM +/- 200 RPM when
the engine is at full power. Do not modify the engine governor settings. The governor controls the maximum safe
operating speed and protects the motor. Overspeeding the engine is dangerous and will cause damage to the engine
and other moving parts of the machine. Consult your authorized dealer for engine governor adjustments. Familiarize
yourself with successful operating conditions and avoid those that could overload and damage the machine. Do not
overload or attempt to chip material beyond the manufacturer's recommendations. It may result in personal injury
or damage to the machine. Learn to recognize the sound of the machine when it is overloaded. If the machine gets
stuck due to overload or other cause, stop the machine immediately. If the machine stalls and the engine does not
stop, it can burn the belt or/and ruin the clutch. Only your experience as an operator will tell you how quickly you can
successfully feed branches into the machine. Clutch damage can be costly, and is not covered under warranty. For
this reason, it is important to turn off the machine immediately if it gets stuck.
CLUTCH MAINTENANCE
The centrifugal clutch on this machine is permanently lubricated and requires no oil or grease. However, after long
periods of use, if the drum exhibits excessive vibration, you should replace the drum assembly. Always change shoes
and springs in outfits. Every time you change your shoes, replace all the springs.
CLUTCH REMOVAL
•Remove the clutch from the shaft by removing the bolt and washers.
•Slide the clutch off the shaft.
•Remove the key from the axle.
INSTALLING A NEW CLUTCH
•Clean the shaft and remove burrs.
•Apply anti-corrosion compound to the shaft.
•Place the key on the shaft.
•Slide the clutch onto the shaft and secure with the bolt, flat washer, and lock washer.
•Tighten the two allen head screws.
ADJUSTING OR REPLACING THE BELT
BELT ADJUSTMENT
Your chipper belt should deflect 3/8" (9 mm) under three pounds of pressure, as shown below. If not,
adjust it following these instructions:
Remove the belt protector.
Loosen the 4 bolts on the motor plate.
Move the motor with the horizontal adjustment bolts until it has the correct tension, as shown below.
Tighten the motor screw again.
Replace the belt guard.
BELT REPLACEMENT
To replace the belt, follow the belt adjustment instructions above.
After loosening the engine bolts, remove the old belts and replace them with new belts. Always
change both straps as they come in a paired set. This is necessary for correct operation.
Adjust the tension and alignment of the belt according to the instructions above.
NOTE: Check and re-tighten the straps after the initial break-in period, which is one hour of use.
