MAINTENANCE
INSTRUCTIONS
At the beginning of each season and twice monthly
thereafter, it is important to perform the following
maintenance inspections:
1. Tighten all nuts and bolts. Replace as needed.
2. One week after assembly, check unit for loose or missing
bolts and tighten or replace if needed.
3. Check all covers designed for bolts and sharp edges and
assure they are present and in good condition. Replace if
they are loose, cracked, or missing.
4. Check all moving parts including swing seats, ropes,
cables, swing bearings, and chains for rust or other
deterioration. Also Inspect s-hooks, brackets, eyebolts,
hardware, etc., for proper closure and for signs of wear,
deterioration, rust and/or damage. Replace as needed.
5. Inspect swings and chains for evidence of deterioration.
Replace as needed.
6. Lubricate all metallic moving parts with a consumer
branded machine oil (IE: 3 in 1 oil).
7. Check all metal tubing and slide bed for damage and
sharp edges. Replace as needed.
8. If metal tubing becomes rusted, lightly sand the rusted
area and repaint using a non-lead based paint meeting the
requirements of Title 16 CFR Part 1303.
9. If slide bed is exposed to direct sunlight, always check
bed to make sure it is not too hot for children to use.
10. Check unit for scuffs, burrs, sharp edges and any other
defects that may occur from assembly, abuse, shipping or
everyday use. Burrs and sharp edges may be filed down
until smooth and covered with duct tape if necessary.
11. When it is time to dispose of this or any playground
equipment, please completely disassemble unit and dispose
of it in a safe place and manner so as not to present any
hazards to any individuals. All parts of this unit are recyclable.
12. Re-install any plastic parts such as swing seats or other
items that were removed for the cold season.
13. Rake periodically and check depth of loose fill protective
surfacing material to prevent compaction and to maintain
appropriate depth. Replace as necessary.
14. At the end of each play season, remove all plastic plays
and take indoors. DO NOT allow the use of plastic items
when the temperature drops below 32 degrees F, (0 degrees
C).
15. Check all wood members for deterioration and splinters.
Sand down splinters and replace deteriorating wood
members.
IMPORTANT: CONSUMER INFORMATION SHEET FOR
PLAYGROUND SURFACING MATERIAL
(USCPSC Guidelines)
One of the most important things you can do to reduce the likelihood of
serious head injuries is to install a shock-absorbing protective surfacing
under and around your play equipment. The protective surfacing should be
applied to a depth that is suitable for the equipment height in accordance
with ASTM Specification F 1292. There are different type(s) of surfacing to
choose from; whichever product you select, follow these guidelines.
LOOSE-FILL MATERIALS: Maintain a minimum depth of 9" of loose-fill materials
such as wood mulch/chips, engineered wood fiber (EWF), or
shredded/recycled rubber mulch for equipment up to 8' in height; and 9"
of sand or pea gravel for equipment up to 5' in height. NOTE: An Initial Fill
level of 12 inches will compress to about 9 inch depth of surfacing over time.
The surfacing will also compact, displace, and settle, and should be
periodically re-filled to maintain at least a 9-inch depth.
Use a minimum of 6" of protective surfacing for play equipment less than
4' in height. If maintained properly, this should be adequate. (at depths less
than 6", the protective material is too easily displaced or compacted)
NOTE: A fall onto a hard surface can result in serious injury to the equipment
user. Grass and Dirt are not considered protective surfacing because wear
and environmental factors can reduce their shock absorbing effectiveness.
Carpeting and thin mats are generally not adequate protective surfacing.
Ground Level equipment – such as a sand-box, activity wall, playhouse or
other equipment that has no elevated play surface – does not need any
protective surfacing
Use Containment, such as digging out around the perimeter with landscape
edging. Don't forget to account for water drainage. Check and maintain the
depth of the loose-fill surfacing material. To maintain the right amount of
loose-fill materials, mark the correct level on the Play Equipment support
posts or legs. That way you can easily see when to replenish and/or
redistribute the surfacing. DO NOT install loose fill over hard surfaces such
as concrete or asphalt. You may be interested in using surfacing other than
loose-fill materials – like rubber tiles (Pre-manufactured) or poured-in-place
surfaces. Installation of these surfaces generally requires a professional and
is NOT "do-it-yourself' projects.
Review surface specifications prior to purchasing this type of surfacing. Ask
the Installer/Manufacturer for a report showing that the product has been
tested to the following safety standard: ASTM F 1292 Standard Specification
for Impact Attenuation of Surfacing Materials within the USE ZONE of
Playground Equipment. This report should show the specific height for
which the surface is intended to protect against serious head injury. This
height should be equal to or greater than the Fall height – vertical distance
between a designated play surface ( elevated surface for standing, sitting,
or climbing) and the protective surfacing below – of your play equipment.
Check the protective surfacing frequently for wear. Proper placement and
maintenance of protective surfacing is essential.
Extend surfacing at least 6' from the equipment in all directions. For to/fro
swings, extend protective surfacing in front of and behind swings to a
distance equal to twice the height of the suspending chain or rope, plus 6'
in all directions. For Tire Swings, extend the surfacing in a circle whose radius
is equal to the height of the suspending chain or rope, plus 6' in all directions.
Note: The maximum fall height for this product is 6 feet. The minimum
ground clearance between the bottom of the suspended plays and the
playing or ground surface must be 8 inches.
This information has been extracted from the CPSC publication "Playground
Safety". Copies of these reports can be obtained by sending a postcard to
the: Office of Public Affairs, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission,
Washington, D.C., 20207 or call the toll- free hot line: 1-800-638-2772.
INSTALLATION
INSTRUCTIONS
Place gym set on LEVEL GROUND not less than 6 feet
(1.8m) from any structures or obstacles such as fences,
garage, house, overhanging branches, trees, stumps
or roots, laundry or electrical lines or wires. But be
aware of the USE ZONE space requirements.
DO NOT install over concrete, asphalt, gravel or any
hard surface which may cause injury should a fall
occur.
Anchoring of Gym Is recommended but not required.
Be certain that all anchoring devices (including
concrete) are placed below the level of the playing
surface or below ground level to prevent tripping or
resulting in injury from a fall.( If this Gym Set comes
with Anchors, see instructions, in Manual, for the
action necessary to assemble properly ). Anchors can
be purchased from our Customer Service Dept at
888.350.3015 or by emailing us at cservice@flexible-
flyer.com or they can be purchased at any retailer that
sells swing sets.
When ready to assemble Gym Set, Refer to Assembly
Instructions and Illustrations in the manual.
DO NOT leave hardware un-tightened after
completing assembly. Securely tighten all nuts and
bolts, etc. once assembly is finished. Do NOT leave
screw or bolt threads uncovered if exposed.
To prevent possible serious injury, do not allow use
of Gym Set equipment until properly installed.
One week after assembly, check unit for loose or
missing bolts and tighten or replace if needed.
NOTE: Dispose of all packaging properly after unit has
been assembled. Re-Cycle if possible. Please retain
the manual for future reference and review each
season.
