USER MANUAL
PAN16
INTRODUCTION
A DI box is used to change an unbalanced, high-impedance line level signal to a balanced low impedance
signal for connection to a microphone input. An unbalanced high-impedance cable routing is susceptible to hum
and other noise. The cable length is limited because with longer cables, not only does the noise level rise, but due
to cable capacitance, you can also expect a loss of highs. These problems are avoided with low impedance
balanced signal routing. For this reason, this type of routing is used almost exclusively in professional studios and
for live performances.
The PAN16 is a passive DI box that contains 8 independent channels in the 19" format. The DI box is constructed
with the same circuitry design as our proven PAN01. The PAN16 is particularly useful when several signals must be
balanced in one place at the same time, e.g. in the keyboard rack. Because the DI box is built as a passive device
with high quality transformers, no power supply is needed. Almost all sockets and switches are located on the front
panel, only the XLR output jack and parallel LINK sockets are located on the rear panel.
CONNECTIONS
The PAN16 has eight independent channels. The following description applies to each of the channels 1 - 8.
Line level signals, such as those from keyboards are connected via a shielded instrument cable with a jack
plug (6.3 mm mono jack / TS jack) into the jack designated as "Input". If the signal is to be simultaneously
connected to a different amplifier, use the "LINK" jack as a parallel connector for looping the signal. Unbalanced
instrument cables should not be longer than absolutely necessary. Therefore, the PAN16 should also be
set up near the unbalanced source.
The low impedance balanced output signal is available on the rear panel XLR/m socket. The assignment of the
socket is standard, with a hot PIN 2.
The connection to a mixer input is performed with a balanced, shielded microphone cable. The cable length is
not critical and may be 100 feet or more, without an audible deterioration of the signal.
THE MERGE LINKS / IN FUNCTION
Alternatively, the PAN16 also offers the possibility, for the stereo signal such as that of a keyboard to sum to a mono
signal and to direct it as balanced mono signal to the PA system. Using the MERGE LINK / IN switch, the LINK out
can be converted to a second input. In this case, stereo outputs of the instrument are connected to a PAN16
channel via the two jacks (INPUT and LINK / IN) and the switch is pressed down. The mono summed looped signal
is present on the rear panel LINK socket.
