1 Safety instructions

Carefully read through
the instructions before
putting into operation.
Observe the instructions and
keep them in an easily acces-
sible place for reference.
Safety instructions are iden-
tified by a dot F and must
always be observed.
F The charger must be set up
horizontally on a firm surface.
F Protect the charger against
moisture.
F Do not cover the charger.
Set up the charger so that
there is a clearance of at least
15 cm on all sides for ventila-
tion purposes.
F Charge batteries only in well-
ventilated rooms.
F Avoid fire, naked flames and
sparks!
Explosive gases are produ-
ced during battery charging.
F If there is pungent smell
of gas:
Acute danger
of explosion!
Do not switch off the unit.
Avoid fire, naked flames and
sparks.
Do not remove the charging
clips.
Immediately
ventilate
room well.
Set the control knob (2) to the
left-hand limit position.
(minimum charging current)
After ventilation:
Switch off the unit.
Have the battery checked by
an after-sales service center
for Bosch products.
F The charger is exclusively
designed for charging fault–
free lead–acid batteries with
nominal capacities ranging
from 36 Ah to a maximum
English
210 (100) Ah and with nomi-
nal voltages of 12 (24) V!
F Only tested batteries must be
connected in parallel for char-
ging.
F Do not charge maintenance-
free batteries together with
standard batteries.
F Only charge maintenance–
free batteries after establis-
hing that the battery requires
charging, either by means of a
battery test (e.g. with a Bosch
battery tester) or a start at-
tempt
(starter
cranks the engine).
F Maintenance–free
may only be charged in con-
junction with the appropriate
monitoring (e.g. voltmeter).
F The maximum charging time
for maintenance–free batte-
ries is 6 hours for capacities
up to 100 Ah and 12 hours for
capacities over 100 Ah.
F Batteries which are not suita-
ble for charging must not be
charged!
F The battery must be discon-
nected from the vehicle elec-
trical system if there is a risk
of damaging electronic equip-
ment!
F The rated battery voltage and
selected charging
must agree.
F The mains connection cable
and the charging leads must
be in perfect condition.
F The charger must only be
connected to a mains power
the
supply where the mains vol-
tage agrees with the voltage
rating on the rating plate.
F Please connect the unit only
to an earthed socket outlet in
order to protect against elec-
tric shock hazard.
F Comply with the instructions
of the vehicle manufacturer
when using the charger as a
starting aid and when char-
ging vehicle batteries!
F Set
the
voltage
switch (6) to "0" (OFF) before
connecting the charger to the
mains supply!
F Wear protective goggles.
F Immediately wash off acid
splashes on the skin or clo-
thing with large quantities of
water. If necessary consult a
doctor.
F Unscrew the inspection plugs
of standard batteries before
battery charging.
F Never disconnect the char-
ging clips during charging.
F Never short-circuit the char-
no
longer
ging clips.
F The charging process must
batteries
be ended as soon as the bat-
tery begins to produce gas!
F Starting aid may only be given
for a max. 1 minute! Then ob-
serve a cooling–down period
of approx. 25 minutes!
Maintenance–free batteries, stan-
dard batteries and exhausted batte-
ries can be charged with the power-
ful rapid start charger WL 400 S.
The charger is designed for rapid
charging and for use as a starting
aid.
The charging current can be adju-
voltage
sted steplessly.
The following safety functions are
integrated:
f Reverse polarity protection
The charging voltage remains
switched off if the polarity is
incorrect.
f Terminal short-circuit
protection
The charging voltage cannot be
switched on in the event of a ter-
minal short-circuit.
f Overload protection
If there is continuous overloa-
ding the thermostatic switch in
the transformer switches the
charger off. After a cooling–
down period of 15 ... 30 minutes
the thermostatic switch automa-
selector
tically switches on again
f Automatic circuit–breaker
