4'' SUBMERSIBLE PUMP INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
IMPORTANT: Read carefully this manual before installing or operating the pump.
CAUTION:
Review instructions before operating the pump.
Electrical installation shall be in accordance with the National Electrical Code, and all applicable local codes and ordinances.
This submersible pump may develop very high pressure, therefore it is an obligation to install a relief valve on the
tank to avoid possible danger of the tank bursting that can cause property damage and/or personal injury and/or
death.
WARNING - RISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK:
Have a qualified electrician provide electrical power to motor.
Ensure lead and ground wires are properly waterproof and securely connected.
Always disconnect power before servicing.
This pump is built to be used in a water well. Never use it in swimming pools.
Never test a pump or use a pump outside a well without grounding it.
Above all, it is necessary to clean up your well. You should remove all foreign particles, like sand, that can damage the pump.
This step must generally be done by your well driller. Your submersible pump must be installed at a minimum of 15 feet (5 m) from
the bottom of your well in order to prevent aspiration of sand by the pump.
WARNING: To prevent dropping the pump in the well, it is recommended that a 1/4" minimum diameter nylon safety rope
(according to the depth) be attached to the pump and up at top of the well. On the discharge head of the pump, a ring allows the
fastening of the rope and, at the top of the well, the rope can be attached to the hook supplied with the well cap (ex.: CVA-600). It
is important that there is no any tension on nylon safety rope.
SPLICING CONNECTORS, protected by heat-shrink tubing. It is very important to use only submersible cable.
1) Remove 3/8" (9.5 mm) insulation from ends of motor leads and drop cable wires.
2) Slide plastic heat shrink tubing over motor leads.
3) Match colors and lengths of drop cable to colors and lengths of motor leads.
4) Insert cable and motor wires into butt connectors (Fig. 1). Crimp connectors and weld with tin (Fig. 2). Pull leads to check if
the connections are secure.
5) Center heat-shrink tubing over butt connectors (Fig. 3) and heat with a torch (a match or lighter will not supply enough heat).
IMPORTANT: Keep torch moving, because too much concentrated heat may damage tubing.
1) Use a good quality pipe (ex.: polyethylene pipe) that will resist to high pressure produced by the system.
2) Take care to cut the pipe at the exact length that you need. It is important to remember that the pump must be installed at a
minimum of 15 feet (5 m) from the bottom of the well.
3) All pumps arrive with a check valve. For installation over 200 feet (60 m), install an extra check valve at the tank entrance and
at each 100 feet (30 m).
4) It is important to install a torque arrestor 1 foot (30 cm) above the pump to reduce torque strain produced by motor starting and
stopping.
5) With the pipe installed, the pump can now be taken down into the well.
6) Fasten the electrical cable on the pipe with clamps or tape at every 10 feet (3 m) to avoid damages. At the first fastener, you
must give a little slack to the cable to get a safe installation. Take care not to scrape the submersible cable against well casing
when you lower the pump into the well.
7) Use an ohmmeter to make insulation and continuity checks on the cable once the pump is installed. It locates any default in
the electrical cable.
8) Don't forget to fasten the nylon rope to prevent losing of pump. (Don't put tension on the cable)
There are many ways to arrange a submersible pump control center.
1) Do a good choice of tank adapted to your installation. The dealer will inform you.
2) At the entrance of the tank, many controls and measuring displays are needed for a good pump operation. These controls are
a pressure gauge , a relief valve and a pressure switch.
ADVICE: Teflon paste is recommended for all threaded joints.
1) It is recommended that a qualified electrician be employed to connect the pump.

2) A pump with a 2 wire motor does not need control box. All electrical components are incorporated in the motor.
3) A pump with a 3 wire single phase motor needs a control box that includes a relay and a capacitor. The control box is always
filled by the manufacturer. Do the connecting to the control box as showed in wiring diagram, to avoid damage to the motor.
4) Respect the length of electrical cable recommended by the motor manufacturer. If you don't respect this, it's sure that the
warranty will null.
In all cases, the pump must be supported at 15 degree slant to assure proper bearings lubrification whether the pump be placed
near the slope or in the bottom. Shield the pump from direct physical contact. Protect and screen the pump intake to prevent
blockage by leaves and weeds, but remember the need for an adequate flow over the motor for cooling purposes. A flow inducers
sleeve must be installed over the motor and a the entry of the pump. (fig. 4) In addition, protect the entire underwater installation
from water currents, ice, etc...
NOTE: A submersible pump is usually isolated at the bottom of a well, where electrical leakage from the motor and cable presents
no hazard to human life. This natural protection is lost when you install it in a lake, pond or river (there is no way to stop people
from entering or touching surrounding water). Take precaution in that sense.
