Instructions for use
VARISPOT 500
Caution:
Be sure to form the flash capacitors before first use
of the equipment as well as after every three month
of storage.
To do this, proceed as follows:
1. Switch unit on.
2. Set unit for full power (1/1).
3. Do NOT fire any flashes!!!
4. Leave unit in this condition for one hour.
5. Do NOT turn on the modeling light.
The capacitors are formed after one hour, and the
unit may be used.
1. Basic outfit
Flash unit with plug-in flash tube (LUSROR), halo-
gen lamp (LUSJOD), power cable, sync cable,
protective cover.
2. Accessories
PRO-500 Spot Attachment (25) with projection lens
(27), waterhouse stops, gobos with holder, iris
diaphragm, masking frame, color filters. The Varispot
500 has the standard V-bayonet mount and thus
accepts all reflectors from the current line of
accessories.
3. Assembly
The units have a mounting bracket (6) provided with
a 5/8-inch socket (7) with clamp screw (8). The socket
accepts the 5/8-inch studs of lighting stands. For
stands with studs of different diameter, use an MA-
151 adapter. After slackening the handwheel (4), the
entire flash head can be tilted up or down with grip
(1). To lock it in place, tighten handwheel (4).
4. Preparing the unit for operation
The flash and halogen tubes are factory-fitted.
Connect the power cable to socket (23) at the bottom
of the unit and plug it into an AC wall outlet. Switch
the unit on using the green master switch (22); the
green LED above button (22) lights up. Display (2)
blinks while the capacitors are charging. As soon as
display (2) is permanently lit, the unit is ready to fire.
5. Power supply
The units are factory-set for operation on 220-
240V/50-60Hz. Before connecting for the first
time, check to make sure that you power supply
coincides with the voltage given on nameplate
(20).
6. Switching on the modeling light
Varispot 500 modeling light: 12V - 50W. Once the
unit has been switched on with the green master
switch (22), you may switch on the halogen modeling
light using the yellow button (9). The LED above the
switch will light up green. The brightness of the
modeling light varies in proportion to the flash output
selected.
7. Controlling output in 1/10 f-stops
Use knob (3) to vary flash output from approx. 6%
to 100% (five f-stops can be set). The display (2)
shows the output selected in 1/10 f-stop increments;
reproducibility is ± 1%. Flash and halogen light are
controlled proportionally and have a fixed
relationship. When switching from high to low output,
the excessive energy is dissipated internally, with the
display (2) blinking during this period.
8. 100% modeling light
Button (10) serves to set the halogen light to full
power regardless of the flash output selected with
knob (3).Halogen 100%: LED above button (10) lights
up green.
9. Visual and acoustic firing monitors
The unit offers visual and acoustical confirmation of
flash firing, which can be activated with button (11).
Switch (11) depressed / LED above switch (11) lights
green:
After firing, the halogen modeling light will go out
and come on only when the unit has recharged. In a
multiple-flash setup it is therefore easy to check
whether all units have fired.
Switch (11) in opposite position / LED above switch
(11) does NOT light: An acoustic signal can be heard
after recycling; the optical monitor is deactivated.
10. Synchronization
Plug the sync cable into terminal (24) at the bottom
of the unit and connect it to the camera. Further flash
units are triggered via the slave cell (13) which also
serves as an infrared sensor. It can be switched
on or off with button (12). Slave cell ON: LED above
button (12) lights up green.
11. Changing reflectors
The PRO-500 Spot Attachment (25) is attached to
the Varispot 500 via a bayonet mount (19). The lever
(18) serves to secure the spot attachment or other
accessories in the mount.
Slider set to A = mount open.
Slider set to B = mount locked.
Set slider (18) to A, insert the PRO-500 Spot
Attachment in the mount and lock it by clockwise
rotation. To remove, proceed in the reverse order.
12. Changing the flash and halogen tubes
Switch the unit off and disconnect it from the power
supply. Remove the Spot Attachment or other
accessories. Pull out halogen tube (16) towards the
front. Do not touch the bulb of the new tube with
your bare fingers when inserting it. Follow the
manufacturer's instructions in the box. Carefully pull
out flash tube (17) towards the front and replace by
a new one.
For the types of halogen and flash tubes, see
„Specifications".
