wiring procedures.
Disconnect all power before installing,
WARNING
replacing or repairing. Voltages present in
the control box, pressure switch, magnetic starter or oth-
er electrical apparatus can cause severe electrical shock.
Prior to installation check printed nomenclature on the
Watt-Knot to ensure the voltage rating matches or ex-
ceeds installation voltage.
Due to the nature of this device, there are
WARNING
no user serviceable parts inside. Do not
take apart. Do not use if the case is damaged. Please
dispose of properly.
Fully read and understand the Watt-Knot
CAUTION
installation instructions before installation.
Electrical circuitry and connections thereto must be per-
formed only by electrically qualified and knowledgeable
pump servicemen.
Application
The 240 volt Watt-Knots can be applied to most pressure
switches, control boxes, magnetic starters and a variety
of other controls used on single phase, 2-wire or 3-wire
systems and three phase systems. Maximum nominal
voltage – 240.
The 480 volt Watt-Knot can be applied to magnetic start-
ers, and other three phase controls. Maximum nominal
voltage – 480.
The Watt-Knot is suitable for use on a circuit capable of
delivering not more than 5000 RMS symmetrical Am-
peres when protected by CC, G, J, RK1, T, or K5 Class
Fuses rated maximum 60A and minimum 250V (480V
for AWK3460) with a short circuit interrupting rating of
5kA or higher or a Circuit Breaker rated maximum 60A
and minimum 250V (480V for AWK3460) with an inter-
rupt rating of 5kA or higher. Not recommended for use
with Renewable Fuses.
Function
The Watt-Knot is specifically designed to protect electric
pump motors and controls from damage as the result of
transient voltage surges caused by lightning interference,
switching loads and power line interferences.
Single phase Watt-Knots begin shunting transient voltage
surges at 500 volts. Maximum single phase nominal volt-
age is 240 volts.
Three phase, 230 volt, Watt-Knots begin shunting tran-
sient voltage surges at 620 volts. Maximum three phase
nominal voltage is 240 volts.
Three phase, 460 volt, Watt-Knots begin shunting at
1,000 volts. Maximum three phase nominal voltage is
480 volts.
The Watt-Knots are designed to withstand repeated tran-
sient voltage pulse currents up to 6,500 amperes result-
ing in superior protection, if installed and maintained
properly.
INSTALLATION – SINGLE PHASE SYSTEMS

CONTROL BOX – Attach one black lead to line 1 and
the other black lead to line 2 terminals. The green lead
must be connected to the control box ground terminal.
Ground control box per grounding instructions.
PRESSURE SWITCH – Attach one black lead each to line
terminals. Attach the green lead to the pressure switch
ground terminal. Ground pressure switch per grounding
instructions.

Use only three phase Watt-Knots for three

phase systems. DO NOT use two single
phase Watt-Knots on three phase systems.
MAGNETIC CONTACTOR – Connect one black lead
each to line 1, line 2, and line 3 terminals. Connect green
lead to ground terminal. Ground magnetic contactor
enclosure or pumping panel enclosure per grounding
instructions. The wires used to connect the Watt-Knot to
power and ground should not be any longer than neces-
sary and should avoid unnecessary bends.

GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS
The Watt-Knot will provide adequate protection if a
proper ground is used.
To complete grounding the control box, pressure switch,
magnetic contactor enclosure or pumping panel enclo-
sure, the Watt-Knot green ground wire should be ground-
ed with #10 wire or larger to:
A. Well casing, if not plastic.
B. Motor ground
C. Copper ground Rod
D. Galvanized pipe or rod driven into moist ground at
least 6 feet.
E. Copper plumbing if connected to earth ground.
F. Electrical aluminum conduit if connected to earth
ground.

MULTIMETER
Watt-Knot has a unique feature unlike other secondary
surge arrestors in that it can be checked with a Capaci-
tance meter.
1. Set selector knob on meter to capacitance
2. Connect one black Watt-Knot lead to one meter lead
3. Connect green Watt-Knot lead to the other meter lead
4. Capacitance for each lead, at a multimeter setting of
1kHz, should be 0.5 - 2nF. If a capacitance reading
other than 0.5 - 2nF is attained, the Watt-Knot should
be replaced.
