Dear customer,
Thank-you for choosing a Tetra
Pond APK 400 Aeration Kit for your
pond. Inside is everything you need
to ensure good aeration of the water
to maintain a healthy oxygen level.
Oxygen is constantly used up by fish,
plants and other life. Even in ponds
with plenty of oxygenating plants it is
beneficial to provide aeration, as at
night plants stop producing oxygen
yet continue to consume it.
Oxygen levels can be especially low
in the summer, as warm water holds
less oxygen. If the fish are breathing
rapidly or swimming near the water
surface and gasping for air, this
suggests that there is not enough
oxygen in the water. Steps should
be taken to immediately increase
and maintain the oxygen level by
ensuring the APK 400 is running all
the time. At water temperatures
higher than 20° C, the oxygen
concentration should not fall below
5mg/l. By means of the Tetra Pond
Test Set you can easily determine
the oxygen content of your pond
water, as well as other important
water values (pH level, carbonate
and total hardness).
Winter use
The pond can also be aerated in the
winter to compensate for the lack
of plant life, however the air stone
should be placed near the pond
surface, at the edge of the pond, to
avoid mixing of colder and warmer
water zones due to the air flow.
Prevention of ice formation
It is important to keep a small area of
the pond surface ice-free to enrich
the water with oxygen. The aeration
on the pond surface will help keep a
small part of the pond ice-free.

Accessories:
E. 1 x Flexible tube (length: 10 m)
F. 2 x Air stones
G. 2 x Flow control valves
H. 2 x Check valves
I. 1 x T-piece connector
J. 3 x Replacement felt air filters
Installation
The air pump is designed to be
situated outside the pond, and must
not be submerged.
The pump has two air outlets that
can be used separately or together
(Diagram 1). If using the two outlets
separately the two air stones can
aerate two different areas of the
pond. This is recommended for large
ponds.
Instructions for fitting one
or two air stones
1.a Using one air stone:
Connect the two air outlets with the
T-piece connector cutting the tube
accordingly (Diagram 1, left).
1.b Using two air stones:
Cut tube in two pieces and connect
each to the air outlets (Diagram 1,
right).
2. The kit includes two flow control
valves to regulate the air flow. Place
the flow control valve in between
the tube near the air pump (Diagram
2), to reduce the flow, slowly turn
the flow control knob clockwise
(Diagram 3).
3. If the air pump (outside of pond)
is positioned below the pond surface
water level, there is a risk that water
may flow back by gravity if the air
pump is not switched on or not
working due to a power failure. To
prevent water from flowing into the
air pump and damaging it, the kit
includes two check valves.
Place the check valve in between
the tube at a point outside the
water, ensuring that the arrow on
the valve is pointing towards the
air stone. Please make sure that the
flow control valve is always placed
between the air pump and the check
valve (Diagram 4).
4. Attach the air stone to the tube
and place the air stone and the air
tube into the pond. Place the air
pump outside the pond where an
adequate drainage is guaranteed to
prevent water from collecting under
the pump.
Connect the power plug of the air
pump with the mains supply. After a
few hours the air pump will achieve
its full power.
5. To hide the air tube Tetra
recommends either to weight the air
tube or to fix it under stones at the
bottom of the pond, as otherwise
it may drift to the top due to the air
content.
General information
This appliance is not intended for
use by persons (including children)
with reduced physical, sensory
or mental capabilities, or lack of
experience and knowledge, unless
they have been given supervision
or instruction concerning use of the
appliance by a person responsible
for their safety. Children should be
supervised to ensure that they do
not play with the appliance.
This appliance must be supplied
through a residual current device
(RCD) having a rated residual
operating current not exceeding
30mA.

Care and maintenance

This unit does not require lubricating
due to its low-maintenance design.
Never immerse the air pump in
water and always disconnect the air
pump from the power supply before
carrying out any maintenance work
on the unit. The supply cord cannot
be replaced. If the cord is damaged
the appliance must be scrapped.
On no account must an unqualified
person attempt to carry out any
electrical repairs on this unit.
Please make sure that the air inlet
on the bottom of the pump is not
obstructed and that the air pump is
able to take in sufficient air. The air
filter has to be replaced periodically
depending on the accumulation of

dirt on the felt pad. Remove
the air filter on the bottom
of the air pump and replace it
(replacement felt air filters are
included in this set).
A decrease of air flow may be due to
one of the following reasons:
1. The unit does not operate. If the
unit is not working then check all
fuses and electrical connections.
2. Air inlet filter is blocked. Check
and if the felt pad is very dirty it
should be replaced.
3.
Diaphragms
worn
or
split.
Change the diaphragm according
to the instruction leaflet of the
replacement kit which is available
at
your
local
retailer
or
at
www.tetra.net.
Air stones, after a period of time,
are prone to blocking, which can
increase the amount of back pressure
on the pump diaphragms. Due to this,
the lifetime of the diaphragms can
be reduced significantly. To avoid
this happening it is recommended
that all air stones are replaced on
a periodical basis or when airflow
from them is reduced.
Clean the outside of the unit using a
damp cloth and a mild detergent. Do
not use abrasive or caustic cleaning
agents when cleaning the unit.
Guarantee information
Due to modern production technology,
high-quality components and strict
quality control, we offer a 3-year
guarantee from date of purchase on
the Tetra Pond APK 400 aeration kit.
Please keep the sales receipt. The
guarantee does not include cases of
improper handling, normal wear and
tear or tampering with the device. In
case of complaints, please contact
your specialized dealer or Tetra
