For these energy absorber lanyards, this height can be
reduced to 6.45 m.
As a general rule, the minimum working height for a
fall factor of 2 is calculated as follows (see figure 3):
Webbing length mutiplied by 2 (= fall travel)
+ 1.75m opening of energy absorber (= braking
travel)
+ 1 m safety distance
The anchorage point must always be above the user
(=fall factor of between 0 and 1).
During energy absorber lanyard use at a factor of 1
the free clearance under the user must be at least
3.85m.
Swinging risk:
When the fall arrester enters into action, to avoid
injury due to impact, for instance against the building,
whenever possible choose an anchorage point loca-
ted vertically above the user (see figure 4)
Figure 4: swinging risk
Lanyard with tearing resistance tested on edge :
The edge-tearing resistance of
the energy absorber lanyard
has been tested.
This Miller® logo confirms
approval for horizontal appli-
cations with an edge radius of
less than 0.5 mm without burrs,
bearing in mind that the angle
of the edge must be at least 90°
(see figure 5).
This type of test is used for validating the use of the
lanyard on a similar edge such as rolled steel profiles,
wooden beams or rounded and lined handrails...
The anchorage point must not be lower than the level
of the floor where the user is located.

90°
Figure 5 :
Edge angle greater than or
equal to 90° = use permited
If risk analysis performed before the works begin
reveals that the fall edge is a «particularly sharp and
(or) is not free of buns» (e.g.: edge of terrace roof
without facing, sheet metal cladding or sharp edge of
concrete) or if the angle is less than 90° (see figure 6),
it is necessary to:
- take suitable precautions before work begins to
avoid any risk of falling over the top of the edge
in question
- install edge protection,
- contact the manufacturer
The necessary dearance under the edge must be at
least 6.75 m.
If the Automatic Retractable Fall Arrester equipped
with an anchoring device in class C according to
standard EN 795 is used, it is also necessary to allow
for the reflection of the horizontal work positioning
support to calculate the clearance needed beneath
the user.
Avoid any risks of cable slack or of pendulum falls.
Remember that even if the personal fall protection
system is used in a conforming manner, falling over an
edge is liable to cause an injury (for instance, by im-
pact against part of the structure, against scaffolding
tubes or against any other sharp edges).
Rescue :
After an accident, rescue must take place within
20 minutes (trauma from suspension). The rescue
equipment and devices (for instance, descending
cables) must be operational and procedures suitable
for rescuing the users must be defined.
Users must have been given proper training about
use. The operating capacity of the rescue equipment
shall be the subject of regular checks. Rescue pro-
cedures require regular practice.
