Preparation and assembly
Note : Always refer to the distributor or injection pump supplier manual to determine the appropriate
preparation before attempting to adjust either.
* Whenever work is to be carried out on the distributor or injection pump, refer to the vehicle manual.
TDC = Top Dead Centre
Caution : Always disconnect the vehicle battery before beginning.

Warning label 40 - 45.
It is important to warn the mechanic that forgetting timing pins can be dangerous. Use the warning labels as
follows: Place a 40 or 45 warning label inside the cab on the steering wheel and display the other
conspicuously under the bonnet.

Dial Indicator 01 and Dial Indicator Extension 95.
Fit extension 95 to carry out measurement with measurement rod 65. Unscrew the original stylus (t)
from the dial indicator 01 and replace with the appropriate extension.

Measurement Rod 65 and Bolt 100.
Place the measurement rod 65 across the camshaft housing above the No. 1 cylinder inlet cam and
attach the rod 65 with the bolts 100. Fit the dial indicator 01 plus extension 95, pre-load (P) and
secure (f).

Timing Tool 70 and Timing Screw 75.
Remove the vacuum pump (P) and replace it with the timing tool 70. Make sure that the timing tool
70 is in position at the end of the crankshaft and then secure it with the timing screws 75.

Procedure for Timing Distribution
Note : Depending on the type of injection pump and the timing specified by the manufacturer, proceed
as follows:

Distribution Timing (Applications: Opel 16D, 16DA and 17D engines)
• Position the engine at TDC. • Unscrew the camshaft gear screw. • Install the measurement rod as
per 2-3. • Place the mobile support at the front. • Turn the crankshaft in the CCW direction until it is blocked.
• Reset the dial indicator to 0 • Move the mobile support back while watching the dial indicator needle (record
dial indicator value) . Rotate the camshaft in the CW direction to return the dial indicator to 0 (from the value
recorded above) and continue rotating until the specified timing value is indicated on the dial indicator.
• Fit the timing tool as per 2-4. • Tighten the camshaft gear. • Remove the timing tool.
