8.0 Troubleshooting the VHM Arm
Symptom
Mounted instrument does not
appear level or parallel to the
floor.
Instrument drifts up or down when
the Arm is unlocked.
Arm pivots too freely.
Arm does not pivot easily.
Instrument swivels too freely.
Instrument difficult to swivel.
Instrument difficult to tilt.
Instrument will not maintain tilt
position.
Arm difficult to move up or down
when unlocked.
Arm inadvertently slides down
Channel.
Locking Knob (Arms with Spring
Lock) will not pull out (release).
Counterbalance Bolt difficult to
adjust.
Possible Cause
Channel not plumb. Check with
level.
Weight of instrument not
compatible with Load Rating of
the Arm.
Swivel hardware loose.
Pivot hardware loose.
Mounting surface (e.g. wall, side
of anesthesia machine, etc.) not
structurally sound (does not hold
mounting hardware).
Channel loose at mounting
surface.
Arm not counterbalanced
correctly for weight of the
instrument.
Weight of mounted instrument
(load) not compatible with Load
Rating of Arm.
Pivot Bolt too loose.
Pivot Bolt too tight.
Swivel Nut too loose.
Swivel Nut too tight.
Tilt Adjustment Lever too tight.
Excessive tilt tension.
Tilt Adjustment Lever too loose.
Insufficient tilt tension.
Arm not counterbalanced
correctly for weight of mounted
instrument.
Set Screws (4) in Slide are loose.
Arm not counterbalanced
correctly for weight of mounted
instrument.
Weight of mounted instrument
(load) not compatible with Load
Rating of Arm.
Arm not locked in a horizontal
position.

Remedy
Adjust Channel to plumb, or
reinstall Channel.
Mount instrument on arm with
compatible Load Rating.
Adjust Swivel Nut (section 4.5).
Adjust Pivot Bolt (section 4.4).
Mounting surface must be
reinforced or Channel must be
relocated.
Check for plumb and tighten, or
relocate (reinstall) Channel.
Perform counterbalance
adjustment per section 4.1.
Use arm with compatible Load
Rating, and perform
counterbalance adjustment per
section 4.1.
Adjust Pivot Bolt (section 4.4).
Adjust Swivel Nut (section 4.5).
Adjust tilt and tilt tension per
section 4.6.
Perform counterbalance
adjustment per section 4.1.
Reposition Arm and tighten set
screws.
Perform counterbalance
adjustment per section 4.1.
Reposition Arm and lock in
horizontal position.
