The Squids® Self-Adhering Tape Trap is designed for ease-of-use, and to help reduce the
risk of dropped tools when used with an appropriate tethering system (refer to Using
A Tethering System instructions). The Squids® Tool Attachment Series is designed and
tested to create retrofit attachment points on tools, allowing users to safely tether them
if a secure tool connection point is not available.
DEFINITIONS: "Tool Tails™" – A system component that is captured by the "Trap" and
includes a tethering attachment point.
"Tool Traps™" – A system component that's applied independently over the "Tail",
fixing it securely to the tool and securing it in the event of a drop.
WARNINGS: All warnings and instructions must be read and understood before using this
product. Failure to do so may result in property damage, serious injury, or death.
• Do not use tool attachments in temperatures below -40°F / -40°C or above 150°F /
65°C.
• Refer to individual component labels for specific weight ratings (see selection grid).
Maximum capacity is equal to the lowest capacity component within the tethering
system.
• Always inspect Tool Attachments prior to, and after, each use (refer to INSPECTION
instructions).
• Only use Tape Traps with specifically designated Tool Tails™ or as otherwise instructed
for use.
• Squids Tape Traps should NOT be used with other manufacturers tails or other
attachments.
• Do not wrap Tape Traps around sharp or rough edges.
• Never modify or alter your Tape Trap.
• Never modify a tool that could result in manufacturer guideline deviation.
• Do not use this product if it interferes with the tool's safe working condition.
• Use extra precaution around moving machinery or parts, electrical hazards, chemical
hazards or other apparent hazards.
• Never attach a tool with a Squids® Tool Attachment to a lanyard that is longer than
the Maximum Lanyard Length indicated on the product label of the tool attachment
(refer to the "Using a Tethering System" portion of the instructions).
SHELF LIFE
Shelf date refers to the tape's ability to hold its adhesion strength of 2lbs/square inch.
The application of the product should be inspected regularly to examine the tape's hold
on the trapped object. Any sign of tape unraveling is grounds for removal from service
and replacement. Shelf Life only applies to unused, un-bonded tape. Once tape is applied
and has bonded to itself, shelf life does not apply, however, the tape should be inspected
regularly. The "Date of Expiration" (DOE) / "Use By" date can be found on the UPC sticker
on the packaging and the inner core of the tape roll.
PREPARING FOR APPLICATION
• Ensure tools are clean, dry and free of grease, oil or other substances during
application.
• Read instructions completely before and during assembly.
REQUIRED ITEMS FOR ATTACHING TOOL TAILS™
• Appropriate Tool Tails™ (see selection grid)
• Appropriate Tool Trap™ model (see selection grid)
1. For attachment to tools with a captive hole or handle engineered hole into the
tool [fig 1], locate the tool's connection point. Weigh your tool to determine the
appropriate tool lanyard to use and directly attach that tool lanyard to the captive
hole.
2. For attachment to tools without a captive hole, measure the diameter and weight
of your tool, then use the Selection Grid to determine the proper Web Tool Tail™ or
Elastic Loop/Cinch Tool Tail™ and proper length of Tape Trap to apply. (Note that, in
some situations, there are multiple options, so the user may choose their preference.)
a. If the tool is not cylindrically shaped, measure the tool at the widest axis when
determining the diameter.
b. If the tool is tapered, locate and measure the area with the largest diameter you
can create the attachment on.
3. Measure and cut specified length of tape [fig 2] indicated on the table on the reverse
side. Remove plastic coating from tape. [fig 3]
4. Lay Web Tool Tail™ or choke Elastic Loop/Cinch Tool Tail™ onto the tool.
a. Ensure the Tool Tail™ is positioned as far up the shaft of the tool as possible
without affecting its use. A minimum 1" / 25mm away from the end of the tool is
suggested.
b. For the Web Tool Tails™, ensure the web catch points are facing up. [fig 4]
c. Choke Elastic Loop/Cinch Tool Tail™ onto the tool by sliding it around the tool's
shaft and snug the barrel lock down tightly if applicable. [fig 5]
d. If the tool is tapered, position the tail on or near the portion with the largest
diameter.
5. Wrap the tape once around itself beginning below one of the web catch points on
Web Tool Tails™ or directly below the barrel lock on Elastic Loop/Cinch Tool Tails™.
This keeps the tape in position for continued wraps. [fig 6]
6. Continue wrapping and stretching the tape firmly. Overlap previous wraps by
0.5" / 13mm to 0.75" / 19mm.
a. If Elastic Loop/Cinch Tool Tail™ is used, the tape can be wrapped on top of tail or
crisscrossed on either side of tail. [fig 7]
b. If a mistake is made, unwrap the tape backwards and reapply.
c. Continue wrapping tape until you reach the end. Firmly push down on the end.
The tape will then begin to bond to itself. [fig 8]
